Is it normal suicidal tendancies run in families

I had a bad time a few years ago where I was suicidal and in the hospital, it took a while and finding the right meds to get better but Im stable now. Im happy to be alive, but I was very surprised at my mom's confession: after I had my episode she told me that 6(SIX) people on her father's side of the family had committed suicide. Two of them did it after WWII, two did it as teens and I don't know the details of the others. I think that's a very high number. I think there must be some chemical brain problem in my genetics which causes depression. It cant be coincidental. Anybody have experience with severe depression or suicidal tendencies running in families?

It can be inherited and also a chemical imbalance in your brain.

Depression can be hereditary, just like other diseases. I am glad you are better now. Life is to short to just throw away.

  • Mental illness and developmental disorders run in my family. My second cousin committed suicide last year. I'm not sure if suicide is a bigger problem where I live but I have known quite a few people to do it.

    • I know suicide rates are very high in places that are dark a lot of the year (like the Dakotas and Alaska) And in Japan for some reason....they don't generally murder others they are more likely to off themselves. Kind of noble in a sad sort of way.
      Sorry about your cousin.

      • I'm in Washington state which is often dark. The murder rates are a bit high it seems too. Many serial killers are from my area such as Ridgeway, Bundy and many lesser known ones. It's a crazy place.

        • I live in a little suburb not far from Philadelphia. The crime rate of the nearest city Reading is per capita, more than Philadelphia and Detroit. There are so many gangs and drugs. Id love to move somewhere peaceful like Maine or West Virginia.

          • There are drugs here but very little gang activity or hate crimes.
Most the homicides happen because somebody snaps and kills people.
