Is it normal society makes us compete for everything

If everyone is suppose to work why do we bother making people compete? If its clearly something you all need to do, there is no reason to compete for it is there? In the animal kingdom this decides which people die and which live. However in human society we force everyone to live, and we outlaw murder and rape. So why exactly is letting people starve in the streets a more ideal state of existence to live in? What is wrong with society when we say all must work but some of us deserve to starve and never have a life at all? Granted this makes sense in terms of advancement since the harder working people should be rewarded but when you say "Only some deserve to prosper" what was the purpose of taking away all the other things in nature which were suppose to thin out the heard?
