Is it normal so when i planted a apple tree seed

So when i planted a apple tree seed what it grew into was a cucumber plant and not a apple tree that i was trying to grow, its the weirdest some of my family members don't even believe me on this and its true and now i have a baggie full of cucumber seeds from a apple seed i grew i guess im not suppose to grow an apple tree sens it grew in to an cucumber plant.

What's most likely is that you planted a cucumber seed in error. What's unlikely but possible is that a cucumber seed somehow became lodged inside an apple.

• no not at all. i found out its cross-pollination because the 2 are related. what happened is pollen travels far in the air & wind what the cucumber plants flowers pollen did was it went in the apple tree flower and thats how i got these seeds.

I've learned something there. I didn't know cucumber plants had pollen. I thought the seeds were just in the fruit, like with apples.

Both cucumber plants and apple plants produce pollen. I think you're a bit confused. Pollen isn't a replacement for seeds, it's a component of seeds.

My understanding is that all flowering plants produce pollen (although some can produce fruit or even offspring without pollination taking place), and that producing and receiving pollen is the main function of flowers. The pollen itself isn't the seed, but it contains the male gametes (plant jizz). The female gametes are contained in the ovules. When an ovule is fertilised, the result is a seed.

Apple trees cannot self-pollinate; they must cross pollinate with another apple tree to produce fruit. Hybridisation can occur through cross pollination, but even if cross pollination between a cucumber plant and an apple tree produced viable seeds, the result would not be a cucumber plant. That's not how hybrids work.

I can't find any record of a cucumber plant being successfully hybridised with an apple tree, and I seriously doubt that it could happen by accident. Cucumber plants and apple trees bloom at different times. When apple trees are blooming, the cucumber plants haven't started yet, so an apple tree being fertilised with cucumber pollen is highly unlikely.

Just to help clear things up, pollen is different from seeds. Pollen is the plant equivalent of sperm, while seeds are the plant equivalent of embryos.

The pollen is carried to a flower where it combines with the ova to form seeds. The centre of the flower then grows into the fruit, surrounding the seeds.

This cucumber from an apple seed could have happened because cucumber pollen was carried to an apple flower and combined with apple ova. The flower would then have still grown into a normal apple, but the seeds would have been cucumber/apple hybrids and so would the plants they grow into.

You probably planted the wrong seed. Apple seeds cannot grow into cucumber plants.

I agree with violet. Also Cucumber seeds are small and easy to pop. Apple seeds are not. I know since I love apples and cucumbers and pickles and carrots. I also love salad.

Also, apple seeds differentiate themselves from that of a cucumber with their colouring, shape and size.

That is what I mean. I do not see how you can mix the two of them up.

I remember when I read the other posting of this I thought that maybe someone was playing a joke on the OP. His family or a neighbor could've switched the two. Or better yet, there could have been some cucumber seeds already in the soil!

Yeah that would make sense.

Turf laying services - this is the company we use every single time we need someone to take care of the soil in our garden or plant the new plants. People make many mistakes when they try planting on their own.

Now that I think about it a bit more, your apple seed probably didn't sprout at all. Cucumbers are very hardy, and it's pretty common for them to sprout where you haven't planted them. You probably just had a volunteer cucumber that happened to be where you planted the apple tree.

If it's any comfort, your tree wouldn't have produced palatable fruit anyway. If you want an apple tree that produces good fruit, you either have to do your research and graft it yourself, or buy a sapling. I suggest buying a sapling. Also, it's advisable to plant two trees, unless there is another apple tree nearby, so they can cross pollinate.

Follow-up question: did you plant the apple seed directly in the ground, or did you sprout it in a pot first?

Additional follow-up questions:
• Have you ever grown cucumber plants in the past?
• Do you make your own compost to garden with?
• If you haven't grown cucumbers in the past, how long have you been living at your current residence?

I remember this was posted possibly many months ago.

I'm still not sure how this could've happened. I guess this is one of the mysteries of the universe.
