Is it normal religious people are good people

First off, I have no problem with religious people. Many of my friends are religious. But I get annoyed when I read something online or on TV and there is a statement about how someone is a good person, just because they are religious. Christians especially can be very aggressive with their beliefs, much more than non-religious people. I'm sure there are many great people who are religious. But they aren't great people because of their religion, they just think about others and the right thing to do. Anyone could do that, whether or not some guy in the sky told them to. It just annoys me when someone is called a "good person" because they are religious. IIN?

It annoys me and I'm a religious person. It's normal the way that you feel, someone should be deemed as a good person by who they are as a person, their personality, morals, actions, etc. It drives me nuts when I hear religious people trying to force their beliefs on someone non religious or see them look down on someone non religious. I'm religious and my boyfriend is an atheist. Obviously I don't hate religious people because I am religious, I just don't like the way that they act sometimes. Religion should not deem whether you are a good person or not.

I agree. I believe in God, pray often & try to be good overall. But many people call themselves Christians but their actions are not Christian-like at all.

Some are good, some are bad. People need to stop judging wethere your're nice or mean based on your religion. Religion has nothing to do with one's personality.

I feel the same way. I've even had some of my hardline religious relatives accuse me of being secretly Christian, even though I tell them I'm not, just because I do "good things". Some people seem to think that "good behaviour" is intrinsically linked with religion, when it's not.

Another example of religion as a mindset trying to change it's observations to fit it's rules, as opposed to changing it's rules to fit the observations.

I like to think that genuinely religious people try to be as good as possible coz they believe that there are consequences for them - at a later date.I have

I have to say that known some rotten wife-beaters and the only thing that I know they had in common was that they didn't believe in God. Therefore they felt they could do whatever they liked and there were no consequences.

I do agree that there are rotten people involved in churches etc hypocrites who want to cash in on religion etc. Here we call false Christians as those with a Capital C, but genuine Christians have a small c.

I know exactly how you feel. From my experience growing up in a community filled with different religions, a persons religious beliefs or lack of has almost nothing to do with the way they treat others.

don't let them fool you with their happy faces and mischeviously caring ways. They are evil through and through. Regardless of their religious beliefs.
They will try to forcefully or deceitfully convert you if you let them you know. They can be quite persuasive and actually get you to feel guilty for not believing in god.
Seriously, stay away from religious people.

Does this mean that religious people are bad people?

Some of the worst things in history are committed by people who are convinced they are doing the right thing.

Examples: Canadian residential schools for First Nations

-Prople lobying against same sex marriage, or marriage rights, (look up hospital visiting rights for same sex couples).

Use of religion to oppress women

Often religion is used as a justification for doing really bad shit... These people 100% believe they are doing good, which is scary! I think a lot of people see this and it makes them feel uncomfortable with religion as a whole.

People can be good or bad regardless of what they believe.

I've been wandering around the site, and I noticed the great passion of those without religion to enforce such. In fact, I'm beginning to believe the majority of users here are against all types of religion. I would have no problems with that if the opinions weren't so intensely deafening.

Is it necessary to point out at the end of an argument, "You'd have to be plain stupid to believe that!" or "Geez, how can people go around worshiping some bearded guy in the sky when he doesn't even exist!"? I respect your point, and you might be correct, but religious people are still people.

I realize it's probably a silly question, but if anyone has also noticed this, could you let me know? It may simply be I've wandered to all the wrong places and have reached the conclusion by coincidence. You never know with these things.

Is it any different from those who state that because someone doesn't believe in a god then they have no moral compass and can do whatever they like?

Indeed, there is quite a distinction. Not believing in religion shows nothing about moral standards. Someone can think the concept of higher beings is entirely false, yet still exhibit a strong sense of morality. After all, non-religious people are still people.

The vibe of wrong that I feel stems from the disrespect in regards to having a religion. It seems to spread throughout each related story - even unto this story. One user posts a comment here about how purely evil religious people are. This receives a positive response.

I'm not bothered by the fact that someone does not believe. I'm bothered by the fact that someone ridicules and insults just because another believes. That's all.
