Is it normal people would eat such an animal?

Lobster and krab have got to have some of the best build systems in the world. They are amazingly difficult to kill. Even if you chop off its arm it is and parts of its head it will still move. The shell is very hard and if you ever looked at one up close will notice they have spikes on its shell. It is very difficult to break. The only way to kill it is boil it alive or cut it in the back of the neck. Clearly this a very well designed creature. Krabs are even harder to kill and has similar issues. This must be one of the most difficult things to kill.

You make a good point. You may also be interested in knowing that the octopus is thought to be as smart as a dog.

Actually, Octopuses (Order: Octopoda) are far smarter than dogs. All Octopuses are Sentient creatures and some are Sentient and Ethical creatures.
Dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) are not Sentient creatures, and are not very smart at all, although they might appear that way. They are simply trained to behave in certain ways, as they are usually fully dependent on humans for their survival.
It is well established that Cats (Felis catus) and Pigs (Genus: Sus) are far smarter than dogs.

Dogs are sentient creatures. Do you know what sentient means?

Dogs are not Sentient creatures, although some of them might mimic this behaviour at times.
I use the term 'Sentient' in the context that the VHATC-L2 prefer. They define 'Sentience' as a creature that has an ability to look forward (in time).

That's not really the English definition, regardless of what your galactic alien buddies from 'VHATC-L2' say.

It's used to mean something that can feel (e.g. pleasure/pain), hence its etymological origin: from the Latin word 'sentient' meaning 'feeling'. A dog is sentient because it can feel - it feels pleasure, pain etc. and reacts to external and internal stimuli.

Furthermore, I don't agree that a dog is unable to 'look forward in time'. A very basic example of this are when you teach a dog to retrieve a branch; when you hold the branch in front of the dog, the dog displays signs that it is expecting you to throw the branch. It is referring to memory as a means of predicting the near future i.e. looking forward in time to determine the appropriate action in the present. This is exactly what we do.

this isn't even worth an argument. dogs are definitely sentient.

Both Crabs and Lobsters belong in the Subphylum: Crustacea, in the Phylum: Arthropoda. This is the same Phylum that includes Insects (Class: Insecta) and Spiders (Class: Arachnida). All Arthropods are not Sentient creatures, and it is acceptable to eat them, IF THEY ARE EDIBLE. It is of no concern to boil them alive.
It is of concern for over-exploitation of some Arthropod species.

        1) Capture a live Ant (Family: Formicidae).
        2) Boil a pot of water.
        3) Throw the Ant in the boiling water.
        4) Watch the tears flow from the Bleeding-Heart Animal Rights People.

        • Well you can squish an ant. It has an skeleton on the outside unlike people. If you cut an ant into pieces it usually dies. With a lobster you can pull it into pieces and it will still be alive. My point was they are very hard to kill. If you break a birds neck it usually dies. Most other things are easier to kill but not the lobster.

There is a difference between being "alive" and spasming. Even when you kill the lobster, there is still a post-mortem reaction. For example, when you pour salt on frog legs after they have been killed, they will twitch even without a brain.

I can't help but feel a little bit responsible for the fact that most comments are completely missing the point. I was merely adding information which I thought you could ignore, and which regarded another species that is also consumed as food with hardly anyone knowing of a good reason to question it, when actually there is.

You use the word "inefficient" in a previous comment. I don't think this is about efficiency. Let that be a worry for those who cook lobsters. If they are doing it for personal consumption, they must consider it to be worth the trouble. And if they do it for commercialization, they must include all expenses in the price of the finished product (and consumers must consider the product to be worth that price, otherwise they wouldn't purchase it). So I really don't see your point. Almost everything could be replaced by something else that is more efficient, but less preferable to some, those who opt for the more inefficient choice at their own expense.

All of this indicates that you are a troll, and not a very good one.

I wonder how long it will take for you to die, and I mean it in a way completely detached of any feeling. It's just a question about time amount, that should be answered with a chronometer.

its called an exoskeleton and their ganglia are the size of a pinhead. last I checked, their abdomens are pretty fleshy and I would say quite kill-able. But I've never tried to kill a crustacean with a knife. I've dissected one though.

    • My point was not how smart they are. My point is these kind of creatures are very difficult to kill. I am saying if you think about it this is very inefficient. Yet humans eat them. As well as that it makes the death more agonizing for the creature yes. Generally people will leave things alone that are hard to kill. Compared to a snail which you can pull out the snail. You can not do this type of thing with a lobster. Since most of the lobsters body is covered with a hard shell.

  • Lobster is pretty much... a staple of the diet here in the Caribbean... if we don't catch them ourselves, a fisherman will inevitably be by to sell them to us alive and kicking (or should I say, "tail flapping") fairly cheaply. It's great food!
