Is it normal people do not understand what a placebo is?

If doctor says "It will only work if you think it works" that means it is a placebo. Yet after years of trying on different medication if that what doctor tell you it means it was a lie. Which means the medication is a placebo pill and for all you know you could have been taking sugar pills. They say this for most psychiatric medication. Yet people still believe it works. Its a placebo? How do people not fucking realize this? you could disillusion yourself to think running a mile everyday will cure you. It only works since I think so. So its an illusion. Should placebo medication be forced if they admit ITS JUST A PLACEBO? I mean that is like forcing a 14 take pot if they said several times they really don't want to do it.

I'm not sure what doctors you're talking about but... if your doctor is writing you a prescription for medication and the pharmacist is just giving you sugar pills instead, then you have quite a case of malpractice on your hands.

Unless of course you're voluntarily part of a study or something like that.

    • This is what I was thinking. You can't give someone who has a potentially life threatening illness a placebo and tell them it is something else. That would be a huge lawsuit.

Weird, it feels like it's been awhile since I saw you on this site.

Did you take a break for awhile? Welcome back if so.

No. Placebos are usually used in psychoactive drug trials. Participants dont know if theyre taking the real drug or a sugar pill (placebo)

    • No they usually only say this if the patient is reluctant to take medication or have tried many different drugs that do not have desired effect. They do not explain this to people originally. However when people hear this they rarely ever realize that is how the "Placebo effect" is suppose to work. They tell you are getting better by taking drugs they know wont work but simply telling you it helps will fix everything.

Do you know anyone personally who takes placebos? I've always wondered about the process. Do they write fake side affects and warnings on the prescription or what?
