Is it normal people are getting way to involved with the internet?

I have just read a post and I read a death pertaining to this. Now I am not saying it is good the girl died but honestly I think people are way to involved in the internet. People especially kids do not understand the difference between internet and reality.

I mean it is ok if you spend your whole life on the internet but you have to understand it is a computer. Unless they are making a website saying what a worthless person you are and how to destroy you why do you care?

I keep seeing things posted on internet and on news about "How face book made me sad" or "people are not real on face book". Well who gives a shit. It is a worthless website. You do not have to go kill yourself since your "internet boyfriend dumped you", "Face book made you sad" or "People are not exactly the same on the internet". Am I the only so annoyed with the stupidity of this all! I MEAN IF YOU ARE SO SAD GET OFF THE COMPUTER!

  • The internet *is* the new reality, only some people don't know it yet.

Saying it's not real, that it's just your computer or the internet, is like saying the person on the other end of the telephone is not real because your using a phone. Doesn't make sense.

The only thing different about the internet compared to face-to-face communication is depersonalization, which comes from the *illusion* of anonymity the internet creates.

    • Exactly what I mean. People are friends but they are not friends. They have no connection and it is ok to be friends with someone but a lot of times if someone is willing to flirt it is not to say they love you but they are bored on the internet. Not that they are bad they have no real connection.

      • Right. I guess that would depend on the individual interpretation of the interaction too.

Personally, when I first started making connections via the internet, I assumed it was all done with 100% sincerity because that's what I was putting into it and that's how I go about it in real life. I got burned and (now) I know it's not *exactly* the same, but I don't disqualify all of it as not being real. I know that I have to adjust myself so that I can adapt to this new way of interacting; I have to be more cautious and less trusting.

It doesn't mean that it will be less "real" for me moving onward, that my attempts at connection will be insincere because I cannot (literally) see the other person. It's just that, without the ability to interact visually with a person, I find it more difficult to asses who is sincere and who is not, so I will not blindly trust anyone ever again.

I agree with you that there are people who flirt on the internet because they're bored/dissatisfied with their real lives and not because they are looking for love. They are satisfying a need for interaction without thinking of the consequences of their actions. In real life, it's called leading people on, but on the internet it's apparently considered "not real" because it's not done face-to-face. That disregards the feelings of the person on the receiving end of the flirting though, doesn't it.

        • Well I have a certain amount of sympathy for someone but if they say "I am in love with you" I often tend to shrug it off since I get this from so many people and I just try humor them or say no thank you but often they will nag till I give in. One who I think has mental problems called him self little Anni and said he was going to kill himself every time I had to get off to eat or pee or do things like sleep. I really could not tolerate this mantel case so I blocked him. Also yes that is what most people do in last paragraph.

It only really annoys me when they complain at a high frequency. It annoys me worse when they use said service and complain.

I get the point, yeah, the website sucks, but you don't have to use it and you don't have to blame the website for your perceived character flaws of it's users. It's not like I am asking you to "stfu or gtfo" of an oppressive government regime or anything, there are usually 10 websites where that one came from.

I feel the same way. I was severely bullied going through school, and I know how hard it can be getting up every morning and having to go through 7 hours of Hell everyday. Now with the cyberbullying thing, the answer is simple: turn off the computer. Block who ever is bullying you. Don't go on that website...there are plenty of options! There is nothing like being bullied to your face where there is nothing you can do about it. You HAVE to go to school. That is not your choice, but the internet is. People do take it WAY to seriously, and I think they need to chill. Internet is the internet. It's not real life, and if you can't see the difference between the two, then you probably shouldn't be on it at all.

I'm not saying you're right, but you do have a minor point.
People take the internet too serious, online relationships, marriages even.

However, it's still all very real.

Agreed. I couldn't even read the rest of the comments, they gave me a headache. I mean, it's "real but not real"? Sure the internet is "real", but the crap people say isn't "real". Then again, sometimes the crap people say IS "real"... GAH MY BRAIN! X_x
