Is it normal our kung fu instructor makes us do fingerprints?

I'm sort of a new student. Yesterday after our run, our kung fu instructor asked us to do fingerprints. When it got to be my turn, he said his new students forum isn't working. So he didn't do mines.

What I'm trying to ask is...is it common for Kung fu instructors or martial arts teachers to ask for fingerprints...? I thought that was illegal. The other two students did it without question. I find it strange...

WTF?? Never let anybody take your fingerprints, unless its the police, then you have to.

This is completely bizarre!! You should not be comfortable with this. Total privacy invasion. It's not good to have your fingerprints on any file.

Politely refuse, say you don't want to do it. (You definitely don't have to and nobody can force you)

    • Yeah I know.. I'm just afraid he'll kick me out. He takes a shit ton of money though. For his classes. Abnormal amounts. So I have mixed feelings. It's just that I was really starting to love this school. And people in it. :/

Seriously, I think you should report him. This whole "business" of his sounds shady. You should consult a lawyer.

    • I have no idea honestly. I was too shy to ask why he was doing this at all..

You really need to ask. If he's putting this online and/or isn't qualified to take fingerprints you need to contact either a lawyer or, perhaps, BBB and launch a compliant.

        • But what could possibly be his motive?

The whole thing sounds strange. When I was a young child, I took karate. I don't recall them ever doing this. However, at certain summer camps and after school program they would have the "I-dent-a-kid" program. Our photos would have to be taken and fingerprints done. If he was doing this for an important reason like this, then maybe... Is he doing this for security purposes? What happens if someone refuses? You might want to take this up with an authoritative party.

    I'd say, "no way Jose"!
May not be illegal, but definitely an over-extension of his authority and a violation of your rights.

        • Yes. He hasn't yet. But I'm sure when he fixes the program he will. Why...?

Maybe there was a break in or something, an they're getting prints off everyone to eliminate prints. We had a break in at our school and thats what they did.
