Is it normal (or dangerous) for a woman to shave her thighs?

Several of my former girlfriends had a good amount of hair on their thighs. I asked them; "when they shave their legs why do they avoid their thighs?" On several occasions I was informed that they were told by their mothers and their peers that shaving your thighs can cause cancer. I find this explanation absolutely ridiculous, but it came from several women, none of whom knew the others and it was over a period of more than 20 years. Anyone ever hear of this?

lol, i see no scientific evidence that could support how shaving your calves is fine but shaving your thighs will give you cancer. think of it like this, your legs are a big continuum, there isn't really a break between the thigh skin and the calf skin, so why would it make a significant difference? i always shave both, and personally for the most of people i've ever heard from who don't shave the top it's because: 1. they don't wear very short skirts/shorts 2. they figure no one notices 3. they can't be bothered 4. they have fine hair. i'd say that cancer thing is a myth, shave away.

    Being alive causes cancer.

Our immune system basically nukes thousands of cancer cells every day. In essence, we're constantly "getting cancer" and then overcoming it on a regular basis.

Shaving has zero bearing on this whatsoever, no matter where you do it.

It's normal for women to shave their thighs (I don't cause the hair isn't thick or dark enough), but what's NOT normal is that shaving your thighs will cause cancer? What? I have never heard that before...

I shave my thighs and I'm fine, that's just BS from uninformed people.

That seems to be the opinion of the majority of commentors, Cheeky. Thanks for your input on this matter. I'm not a youngster and I heard this cancer thing many years ago. Maybe it was from way back then.

You're welcome :) I think it was an urban legend from a long time ago. You can now assure anyone who believes in this strange myth that nothing will happen to them.

  • I didn't know whether to vote yes or no because the title asks one...the body of text asks the other, but I've honestly never heard such a line of b.s. I've never seen a single study that even hints at shaving causing cancer.

If u r gonna get cancer it will be because of genetics or smoking or eating too much processed food or drinking too much alcohol, not shaving your thighs!!!
