I am only dark blonde with green eyes, but when people find out my family is German, they freak out and ask if we're Nazis. I'm not racist, and in my opinion, Nazism is horrible, embarrassing, and un-American.
I bet some of those idiots don't even know the extent of Nazism. I travelled to Poland last year to visit Auchwitz and left feeling extremely humble and knowing that Hitler was surely insane. I'm sure that the majority of Germans are deeply saddened and ashamed to have this history in their country. For all those people know, most of your family could have been murdered for helping Jews, so it is highly offensive. I was also told that if you do a "Heil Hitler" salute in Germany you would be arrested.
I think if someone asks you if you're a Nazi you should just reply by asking them if they are a douche bag.
First of all, it's small-minded and stupid to refer to Germans as Nazis. Lots of the opinions of Nazism were prevalent in Europe at the time. If it hadn't have been Germany, it would have been someone else.
Second of all, why is Nazism un-American? Most people see Nazis as a single creed which attack specific other cultures, kill them, and plunder their riches. Swap Jews for Muslims, and gold for oil, and... you know?
I'm not trying to insult here, although I am being deliberately provocative in order to play devil's advocate.
The people that ask you this are just the same dumb racists that still make white people feel guilty about slavery!

A lot of people are still prejudiced against Germans because they think they were all Nazis during the war.
i would look them dead in the eyes, ask them "Are you serious?" and walk away. i don't even think that question justifies an answer...esp. since you aren't racist

That's really rude, stereotypical, and uncalled for. You should get upset about it and let them know that it's not appropriate.
I'm a German American and I have black hair and brown eyes. I'm a descendant of Nazi Germany, and very proud of that.
I'm Blonde hair Blue eyed, and 100% German, and I get that all the time. At my age I just blow it of because I am more educated then those who think I'm a Nazi.
Someone asked me if I was a Nazi once, and I have brown hair, green eyes and am of Scotch-Irish descent. It is definitely not normal.
Hahah I had the same problem when I was younger. I'm German, and I was born with blonde hair and blue eyes, the typical German. But as I got older, my hair got darker, so I'm no longer questioned.
People do that to me too. I have blonde hair and blue eyes and people ask me if my family used to be Nazis.
