Is it normal not to want some one to like the same as you

So I've been keeping distance from my former best friend for some time now. Mainly because we did too much together and I just felt hemmed in.
Another reason that really bothers me is that she was/is always on the track of finding herself. Instead of looking for things she liked she just started to copy me. And it's not a positive 'you're ny idol'-copying but rather a 'imma find everything you like it and like it even more than you'-copying.
I like Arctic Monkeys and Leo DiCaprio etc and idk all of a sudden she appears to be a huge fan of this stuff too. So what I want to ask is is it normal/okay to get angry when she's such a copy cat? Or is it wrong that I feel like I have to distinguish myself?

No I think you're justified in being annoyed. However, I feel like there's more to this story though, like from her perspective. I feel like she doesn't really know who she is, but she wants people to like her. I mean if people like you, then its totally understandable why she'd want to imitate you. I think that you should talk to her, and try to express that you liked who she was before she started copying you. Try to make her feel better about the person she was before she started liking all the same stuff you do. In case she replies with something along the lines of not being a person or not knowing who she was, then just tell her that she doesn't have to know who she is, but whatever she was you like that person. Tell her that she doesn't need to be anything else, she's fine the way she is.

Start liking self mutilation, random violence and robbery. When she follows your lead....... Turn her in to the cops.

  • The way you wrote it out, it does sound annoying. I think it's natural to want some space from anything that you've saturated yourself with for too long, including people.

Perhaps you two are more alike than you first thought, but you were the friend with more sophisticated tastes. And being that you are similar enough to be friends, once you introduced her to those things, she found she (authentically) liked them as well. This is normal too.

I hope you two can be close friends again once you feel more comfortable. I bet she misses you. :)

  • Nobody is like anybody. She has her own individual trait of being a poser.
