It's normal, a lot of my casual friends don't care about lyrics and I don't care from time to time either, it depends on the artist and genre really. If I listen to some pop song I never bother listening to the lyrics, but if it's like a Floyd song or a S.O.A.D. song I always listen to the lyrics, but not the first time. My current system is that I listen to a newly discovered song a few times just to see if I like the sound of it and if I don't like it I just go to the next song, but if I enjoy the song I look up the lyrics and start interpreting the song for myself and sometimes I look up other people's interpretations of it.
I listen to a lot of dance/electronica and hip hop, so most of the time the lyrics are just about sex, partying, dancing, or all of the above. Naturally, I rarely pay attention and place a lot more importance on how good the melody, beats and bass are.
I think it's more common amongst people who don't know how to play music themselves. I think it's normal enough.
As for myself, the lyrics are often just as important as the music that accompanies them.
