Is it normal not to know what people want these days?

Lately, I have encountered a lot of snobbish jerks, but they seem different from the snobbish jerks that I used to know of.
Back in the 2000's it seemed that people would be rude to other people in order to impress "cooler" people. People would also flaunt material wealth to attract "cool" people and hang with the elite. These people were jerks, but their motives were crystal clear.
Nowadays, it seems as if it is cool to not hang with anybody, which makes no sense, because how can people validate each other's "coolness" if they are busy ignoring each other? It seems like a lot of people are jerks to everybody and strive for material wealth with no social motive.
I cannot make sense of this. Does this seem accurate? Am I normal for being confused?
What do people want these days?

I am going to say you are normal for being confused, because that all just confused the hell out of me. I have no idea what any of that even means.

    • I had a hard time articulating what I meant...I guess why does it seem a lot of people are pervasively snotty to everyone these days? What's the point? What's the goal?

The values of society are going down. We are being pushed for material things. There is no depth in people. We are praised and rated for being the best shallow version of ourselfs we can be. Think about it, wigs, make up, plastic surgery. You articulated your point well.

I used to get bullied back in the early 2000s and suffered from low self esteem and depression. And I don't assume it happened because people were trying to impress others. Jerks will be jerks no matter what.

    • Maybe not so much that they were bullying you TO impress others but that there were some people they liked and revered instead of being completely isolated.

It seems the new wealth is in the hands of techies who couldn't be cool if their lives depended on it.
These young millionaires have no conception of what it is to be cool and almost no class, social skills or interpersonal relationships outside of professionally.
I think Bill Gates is a great example. He is one of the richest men on the planet, and yet the guy still looks like that kid with glasses and a pocket protector, working in a garage. Steve Jobs was another example of an entirely clueless wealthy man. He commissioned the ugliest yacht in history.A 30 odd million dollars for a slice of birthday cake that floats; completely classless.
So expecting these types to have the ability or even the desire to be 'cool' is much like expecting a penguin to fly.

I never wanted to be cool. I succeeded, abundantly.

I don't understand why you think everyone wants to be cool.

    • I assume that everybody have some people they want approval and friendship from and some people they think as undesirable. These days, a lot of people seem to act as if everyone is undesirable.
