Is it normal not to have a career?

My question is not phrased correctly. I'm almost 30. I've lived and work in about 5 countries around the world in the last 12 years. I've been to school just to discover that my major sucks. I've toured with a band and thought I'd live and die as a musician. I've been a buddhist monk, I've been married. I've had a bunch of near death experiences.

The point is - I still have no idea what I want to do. And the longer I live the smaller is the list of the things that I even wanna try. The last thing I want is to settle down and tie myself in a slipknot of matrimony and mortgage for some suburban shithole. The idea of having kids is even more messed up.

So maybe it's not "is it normal" question.. I just wanna see how many other people are living the same way, or.. consider this lifestyle proper.

  • Ya, I turned down a career for an exciting life too.

It's never too late to make a career happen though.

Actually it can be too late for a career at some point.

      • Well, yes retirement is imminent, but until then you can make a career happen. You might not be able to pursue the career of your dreams at 70, but there might be an alternative career that could be just as satisfying.

That's pretty much what I've always thought. There are people still going back to school at the age of 60 for their 10th degree, there are people selling everything after some random impulse and just travel the world on a ship.. go figure. But we're still social creatures and I can't help sometimes compairing my way of life to other people's choices.

Screw having a career, I want your life! You have lived and seen more things in your life than I ever will!

Besides 30 is def. not too old to start a career.

Now the real question is -will I have enough patience for a career, lol.

Besides -excitinig things never end. Everytime I return home and say "ok, f*ck it.. I'm actually getting a proper job" something pops up adn the next thing I know I'm buying a plane ticket somewhere again.

Ya, having a career might be stepping it down a little from the life you are used to! Although, if you are able to afford the plane tickets and food and such, you could just do the traveling thing as a career! I know I would love to!

I'm 29 and about to start a serious career. You've lived some exciting times, you're probably at the right age with a lot of good experience under your belt to start the career.

It might even be possible for you to have a career and travel the way you want. A job that allows telecommuting or a job that requires travel might be right up your ally. Really it depends on your financial situation. If you don't need the money, don't do it. I'm writing this from a cubical BTW.
