Is it normal nerds do not like shows about nerds

Is it normal nerds do not like shows about nerds? I never understood this. Whenever there is a nerd show anyone who really is like that or in that field of study hates the show. I never got that. If there is a show about baseball everyone in baseball loves that movie, if its American-football/rugby everyone in that sport loves that show. Yet every-time they have a show about nerds like "Big bang theory" its hated by everyone who is actually like that and loved by everyone else. Which I find ironic. Since if there is a show about "You" wouldn't you like it? They had another show about gamer and everyone into games liked it. Even if the shows are accurate.

I'll keep it simple. Nerds/geeks on TV =/= nerds/geeks in real life.

I used to be a fan of the Big Bang Theory, because it legitimately had some qualities that I enjoyed because I could relate to them. Now, however, that's no longer the case. It's basically become Friends with a few physics and geek references thrown in.

Nerds don't watch TV. pfft! They're too busy making the world a better place.

Be honest. The only time you invite your nerdy cousin around is when you need your computer fixed, or to recover your daughter's deleted college coursework. Nerds, being nice people, if somewhat socially awkward, will do that for you without hesitation. But do you invite your cousin to your next barbecue? Hell no.

I want to see those social situations covered in a show about nerds. Big Bang Theory can f''k right off. Thank you for listening. My mad rant has ended.

    • I probobly would. Also I think most people who see an issue have a want to fix it. The rest of the world is just not smart enough to see everything wrong with the it. So they never really notice. Why I believe well informed people are often very depressed and pessimistic. Since they know the truth no one else is going to ever see. Yet they can not always fix it and that sounds irritating.

Can you really blame them? I mean usually shows that showcase usually give the whole community a bad name. I'm not a fan of the Big Bang Theory because really, plenty, I mean a lot, of people call themselves nerds yet on tv they're portrayed like they're a bunch of awkward gamers. Not every nerd is awkward. In fact I'm pretty sure people like Wolowitz, Raj, and Leonard would be praised since they're extremely smart and apparently being a "nerd" is cool now. But the thing about those characters are that they are kind of dicks but that's because they were bullied into being bullies themselves. They mean well sure but... I'm going off on a tangent.

What I hate about those shows is that they portray these people as unrealistic caricatures. Some shows aren't bad like King of the Nerds, that show honestly had awesome people who seemed like they were all having a good time. They weren't jerks and they weren't awkward they were all just cool people.

The Big Bang theory is just that, a show. And why do they have such huge ratings? Because it's fucking hilarious. The characters aren't dicks, they're just flat. They're not realistic.

      • I think they are funny. Especially sheldon too. The only one I think is really a dick is Raj. I think sheldon is OCD, raj is a dick, Holowitz is a perv and Leonard isn't such a horrible guy just kind of needy.

apparently "nerds" take themselves too seriously.

but really - I disagree with your observation.

Because if you are knowledgeable in a certain lifestyle, profession or subject you notice all of the errors, misconceptions and complete fabrications in the show thus making it unenjoyable. The stereotyping is annoying too.

A real cop watching a cop drama will notice all of the procedural errors whereas an average person won't. Most people aren't cops (or nerds or whatever) so most people can enjoy the show because they're ignorant of the subject.

I don't like BBT because I find none of those guys neither attractive or interesting while in real life I do find some nerdy guys attractive and many more of them interesting.

What about Doctor Who? That is a real nerd show. It's corny. It's attractive. It's philosophical. It's smart.

        • BBT=Big bang thoery. The show has a comic shop the main nerds Sheldon, Leonard, Horowitz, raj all go to. The guy who owns the shop also loves to draw. I forget what his name was. However he tends to be more popular with the ladies since he acts more casual than the other four and ladies like his art. So the main four(well not sheldon) get angry since he so easily woos penny.

Oh I haven't watched it enough to know. Usually when I don't like shows I don't watch them. I guess I might think he's more attractive than the others since he's more relatable.

If there was a show about baseball where all the main characters were big, stupid, 'roided up, wife beaters, then I'm sure they wouldn't like it either.

The problem that I have with Big Bang Theory is that the characters on the show aren't nerds, even though they are portrayed as being "nerdy". They have aspergers. There's a huge difference between "nerdy" and having autism. And it's really hard for me to laugh at that, I just think it's sad for them.

And the one character is "trying" to act nerdy but it just comes off as being flagrantly gay. I think I heard that the actor is actually gay in real life so maybe it's not totally his fault though.

    • Alright sheldons actor is gay in real life. I do not know about the rest of the crew. I also don't think he is basing the character on his self. Secondly why do you believe these characters have aspergers? Also why do you think all baseball players beat their wives? You can fault them for chewing tobacco which is not something baseball seemed ashamed of. In fact they said "Gum chew" was suppose to symbolize tobacco chew. Do you actually have a case of baseball players beating the wife?

I don't think all baseball players beat their wives. Some pro sports players do have shady personal lives though.

But that was exactly my point.

Not all nerds are completely socially deficient to the point where they can't even communicate properly. Some are. And some alos suffer from aspergers. This behavior is more of a product of the aspergers than the nerdiness, but aspergers isn't mentioned anywhere in the show and it's as if they try to pass it off as "nerdy".

        • Again you do not state why you believe that the characters in this show display aspergers. Also its a show. Its not like they are going to have 1000 nerds in one show. So it would have to be an overall idea of what MOST of them do. Second simply being a shady character does not mean you beat your wife.

I think the characters display aspergers because they have many of the traits that aspergers suffers do:
            Fixation on specific narrow interests
Engaging in one-sided, long-winded conversations, without noticing
Inability to pick up on social cues

Also I can name at least a half-dozen instances of domestic abuse, or even murder, committed by someone famous in the sports world. Just last year I remember a story about a football player who pushed his girlfriend out of his truck killing her during an argument.

Again, not all sports players should be pained with such a broad brush, but that's precisely my point.

            • Couldn't those also be classified as OCD? People with OCD get fixated on little things, are perfectionists, get irritated easily if thing are not exactly how they like it. Become very obsessed and focused on particular rituals, and subjects. As well as that people who enjoy a subject THAT MUCH tend to act like they do. People who are fanatics about shows will have the same type of behavior since they LOVE the show. They do also have other interests though.

I'm too old to watch teen shows but when I was a teen "Saved By The Bell" had this nerd character called Screech that was a real caricature. Nerds were so unpopular back then. I really didn't like to think that was how people perceived me and only dudes like Zack or Slayter could get girls.

Because shows like The Big Bang Theory use nerds to gain comedy. People laugh at them, because they are nerds. It's not even a nerd show. It's just a sitcom about four scientists, without any actual reference to science. You may hear a small science joke here and there, but it's so simple that everyone understands. For someone who is educated in science, it's boring.
Nerds do like nerd shows, like documentaries on their favourite topic. For example, my favourite show at the moment is Science Britannica. I'm only simply educated in science myself so I don't understand even 60% of it but my friends who are educated at degree level at some of the best universities in the UK, they love it.

Don't get me started with this "geek, nerd" trend. Its all Hipster BS. Not genuine, just like hipsters with there fucking Mumford and son mustache and purposely "weird" clothes. It detracts from the real people that already are like that.

I don't know. I don't really pay much attention to what is cool anymore. I'm quite happy doing my own thing.
But I guess hipsters have taken some obvious 'nerd' stereotype items and kind of made them their own. Majority of 'nerds' I know wear the smallest, practically frameless glasses they can find. I guess a majority of nerds really aren't how they are portrayed in the media.

        • What worse is when they go up to kids with PRESCRIPTION glasses and tell them they are not nerdy enough and to get new glasses. I mean I don't see how they don't deserve to get smacked the fuck out after this. Its not like people with glasses CHOOSE to be blind unlike they are trying to do. Also simply wearing glasses does not make you automatically more intelligent.

Hipsters wearing glasses they don't need, and therefore making us short-sighted people look like hipsters, can go fuck themselves up their arses with knives.

        • Most people with glasses do not wear nerd glasses. They wear different styles and generally get the least nerdy looking pair they can find. You can usually tell a hipster from a person who really wears glasses. Since the hipster will buy the biggest, goofiest pair of glasses they can find.

I have the misfortune to look awful in most glasses except the big ones, leading most people to brand me a hipster on sight.
