Is it normal my only work ambition is to be a rockstar?

I play in several bands in my area and for the past 10 years I have been committed to my future being a rock star. Unfortunately I am not as far along as I knew I would be but I still feel no other future is acceptable.

While I encourage you to continue to follow your dreams and never stop working for what you want to do, I also believe you should have a fall back plan just incase. I believe you can do anything you want if you work hard enough for it but, at the same time, it's always better to be safe than sorry. Keep going after what you want but, incase things don't work out, have something else on the side that you can fall back on.

Standing in the rain, with his head hung low
Couldn't get a ticket, it was a sold out show
Heard the roar of the crowd, he could picture the scene
Put his ear to the wall, then like a distant scream

He heard one guitar, just blew him away
He saw stars in his eyes, and the very next day
Bought a beat up six string in a secondhand store
Didn't know how to play it, but he knew for sure

That one guitar, felt good in his hands
    Didn't take long, to understand
Just one guitar, slung way down low
Was one way ticket, only one way to go

    So he started rockin'
    Ain't never gonna stop
    Gotta keep on rockin'
Someday he's gonna make it to the top

And be a juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
    He's a juke box hero
He took one guitar, juke box hero, stars in his eyes
Juke box hero, he'll come alive tonight

In a town without a name, in a heavy downpour
Thought he passed his own shadow, by the backstage door
Like a trip through the past, to that day in the rain
And that one guitar made his whole life change

Now he needs to keep rockin'
    He just can't stop
    Gotta keep on rockin'
That boy has got to stay on top

And be a juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
He's a juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
Yeah, juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
With that one guitar he'll come alive
    Come alive tonight

    Yeah, he's gotta keep rockin'
    He just can't stop
    Gotta keep on rockin'
That boy has got to stay on top

And be a juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
He's a juke box hero, got stars in his eyes
Just one guitar, put stars in his eeyes
He's just a juke box hero, aah aah aah
Juke box hero, juke box hero, he's got stars in his eyes
    Stars in his eyes

It would also be advisable to learn about how the music industry really works, all the negative and all the positive aspects, things you may not have known or realized, things you may find appealing or disgusting. I used to work in the entertainment business for years until I finally couldn't stand it anymore. You really need to know what goes on. If you're a rock star, that means you, at some point, signed away your life, humanity and all your rights on a legally binding contract in a meeting you attended with your agent and manager sometime in your past. Despite how far the Internet has come or whatever, it is still a fact you cannot become famous without being part of the big machine. It's a business, a huge business, a multi-zillion dollar, high-exposure business, and the more money, fame and power there is to a business, the more gritty, "soul-selling" reality there is to it. If you are dedicated to your artistry you might have to give that up, give up songs you love, a way of performing you love, and who you are (literally). If you have no problems doing whatever people who are so slimy sometimes make you want to take a shower after just talking to them tell you to do (read: go out on stage in a nude outfit and dance around like you're drunk and nobody loves you, and do obscene things to the most popular male singer of the moment with a foam finger at an awards show watched by millions) then you may actually be happy being a rock star. It has a lot of perks, of course, and if your fans love you, great. If you can put up with the business side of it, great for you and you will probably be successful no matter what you do. Anyway, whatever you choose to do, learn about the dirty dollars that spin the machine, and then decide what facet of it you want to apply yourself to. There's quite a bit that goes on behind the scenes of the "industry" that horrified me, even though I'm pretty difficult to horrify.

The world is full of people who play in bands, hoping to be a rock star. That's why you see so many old geezers playing in third-rate venues. They've been playing in bands for 40 years and they're still "hoping to be rock star!" Forget it and find another vocation. Very few people become rock stars!

    • No, but it's a hard business even though I should be making lots of money.

It's great you are ambitious but maybe not so sensible to chase after just one dream, especially a dream of being in the music business. The music business is probably the hardest business to ever get into.

Do you want to trade your life for fortune & fame? Would you even cut your hair and change your name?

Hey Hey I wanna be a rockstar

      Comment Hidden ( show )
    • I'm not sure if I understand your question. What do you mean by trade my life? Anyone's life is whatever they choose to do with it. In my opinion 99% of people waste their life and I would be very unhappy living the way they do.
