Is it normal my new glasses really hurt my eyes?

For awhile I had plastic glasses. You can get glasses made out of different materials. I got new ones and my old pair is about 3 years old. My new ones are made of glass and they have ruined my depth perception. They are giving me a migraine and really straining my eyes. Are they suppose to do this?

New glasses gives u something like that, but i doubt on migraine. See for a week if it settles down if not, go consult your eye specialist. Migraine happening to people is something i read first time. bothers me a lil bit.

There's a period of adjustment when changing to new glasses, even when the prescription hasn't changed. It can take around a week to get used to a new pair of single vision glasses, more if they are varifocals. In this period you shouldn't revert to using your old glasses as this will prolong the difficulty in adjusting.

However, it is possible for lenses to be cut incorrectly meaning they are the wrong strength / shape for your eyes. This could be because the lab technician messed up, the machine messed up or the prescription from your last eye test is incorrect.

I'd recommend wearing them for a week (do NOT switch to the old pair) and if you're still having difficulty return to the place of purchase and request a refit. Typically you'll have some form of warranty (30 days, 90 days etc.) so if you return within that period and explain the problem to the optometrist or optician they should be able to sort you out with a new pair of correct spectacles. Also be sure to have the glasses adjusted correctly to fit your head as badly fitting glasses can cause problems such as headaches and skin irritation.

(Can you tell I worked in an opticians?)

    • So you are an eye doctor? Well thank you for the information. That helped a lot. I am not sure because I had a glass pair and changed to a cheaper plastic pair. This time would be my third and I have glass again. Also I did have glasses that are too small and they did hurt my eyes.

I'm not an eye doctor, I worked in retail in an opticians, but we were trained in the basics of eye biology (or eyeology as nobody but me calls it) and about the mechanics of cutting lenses to certain prescriptions, as well as aftercare for patients i.e. advice regarding new glasses.

Both glass and plastic are good materials for lenses. Obviously glass is heavier than plastic but aside from that you shouldn't notice much of a difference. So the material in this case is... immaterial :P

        • Also the doctor had told me that plastic is a cheaper material and that she recommends Glass for someone who wears it all the time. She told me that glass will work better but for a lower prescription or reading glasses it does not make much of a difference.

Plastic is a cheaper material, but it works well. The most important thing is getting the lens cut accurately to your prescription, and this is achievable with plastic. Almost all of the spectacles we sold had plastic lenses and did the job.

Glass is a superior lens material, hence why the best lenses for cameras, telescopes, microscopes etc. are glass, but for general purpose spectacles the benefits of glass over plastic aren't really noticeable. This is based on my training, but if your optometrist recommended glass then she's more qualified than me :)

It's normal to have mild headaches for the first few days, but your symptoms are more severe than that. I would recommend going back to your optometrist and asking them to remake the lenses for you.

Yes, it's normal. That happened to me whenever I got a new pair of glasses. It's because your eyes are getting use to the vision. Give it a few days.

normal, the period of adjustment usually lasts a few days. After that the new pair of glasses will feel completely natural.
