Is it normal my mother was stay at home mom since marriage?

My mother got an associates degree, married my dad and literally never worked after that. Maybe a few days before quitting a job once or twice. They qualified for food stamps when my dad lost his job and still... no. She got married at about 23 and had her first kid at 36. She was born in 1960 but still... is this normal?
If any one in the comments could estimate the percent of families that are like this it would be helpful, I think I've only seen it anywhere else for some one in my age group (currently 18) once.

Are you asking if its normal she "Stays home" or that she "Refuses to look for work"? If he lost his job she should probably attempt to find work.

Some people want to stay at home and take care of family. A girl in my school's newspaper wrote an article about it and stated that while she has aspirations, family is important and if you're smart you still achieve your dreams and be a stay at home parent.
