Is it normal my mother redirects everything back at me?

My little sis has some issues. My mother's older so I understand she'd have trouble being there for her. Now I'm not heartless, I don't insult my little sis in front of her. But I do go to my mom to express my concerns. And she always turns everything I say back on me.

I'll say "She should get more sleep, she's ten and sometimes she turns in at midnight"
My mother will say, "Maybe you should get more sleep! You pulled an all nighter or two in college!"

I'll say "She should eat less snacks. Her bmi is over 30, she's going to get sick."
She'll say "Maybe you should look at yourself. You eat way more snacks than her!"

Yes, I'm not good with keeping track of my sleep schedule. But I'm an adult and my little sis is 10. As for the snacks thing... I'm the healthiest person in the family with a bmi of 21 (and I rarely snack.) I come to my mom with real problems and she not only changes the subject but spits an empty criticism at me.

sounds like mom is immature. Its good your looking out for sis. Think of what would be going on if you were not there

    • But I'm not there. I mean I exist but I don't live there with them. I'm not too helpful.

Slip your little sis half a melatonin (totally harmless natural sleep aid) in her last snack of the night. Switch out all the cookies for gluten-free ones, switch all the white breads and pastas with wheat, dump all the candy and put berries in the fridge. Get rid of all the sodas. Your mom will just wake up and go in the kitchen and say, "What the what?!" And you just pretend like you had nothing to do with it. Snacking is fine, as long as it's healthy snacking. I think it's awesome you're looking out for your sister's best interests, and awful that your mom is too selfish to do it.

  • tell your mother you are trying to help sister. next time she brings you into it ignore it and continue on "what can we do to help sister?" let her feel that she is part of the solution
