Is it normal my mom wants to kick me out for having long hair?

I'm 17 year old male, I can't live on my own. I don't have any money to do so. She's probably one of the most close-minded people I've ever met. My hair is about one centimetre under my shoulders and she told me to cut it because I look ugly. I told her that I don't think so, and that it's my opinion, my body and therefore I decide what I want to do with it. She yelled at me that if I can have my own opinion, I can also live by not being dependant on anyone. How does that even make sense? She said that if I won't go to the hairdresser's this weekend, she's going to kick me out. What should I do? There's no one else I can live with.

Cut your hair, become independent quickly, and then tell her to fuck off by becoming everything she's tried to supress- yourself.
Oh, and her kicking you out at 17 is child neglect as you're still a minor. So while you're at the salon, throw that one at her- the damn idiot.
Why do these dumb parents think they can throw a minor out on the street without consequences?

      It's not totally impossible.

I have known parents to lock all of the doors and windows of their house while the child is away and tell them "don't come back". Then, when the police or child services comes to investigate, the parents will say "Oh, THEY RAN AWAY but were welcome to come back at any time" and they usually take it at face value and walk away because runaways are so common.

Wow. I forget what monsters parents can be. *Sigh* Doesn't help that nobody believes the poor kids. I told the cop at my school years ago about how my mom choked me- he told me if I lied again I'd be arrested. Ha, I still hate adults I just realized. lolol

Eh, my Mom whooped the ever loving hell out of me once and then (she admitted this years later) injured her hand after I left. The cop came, she told them I injured her and that I was lying and guess who he believed.

Cops are always on the adults side, and then adults wonder why oh why child abuse is so common.

          Fuck adults man.

Have you ever thought she may be telling you the truth and you look like a bag of shit with long hair?

    • I might look like a bag of shit to her or anyone else, but why should I care about their opinion? I like the way I look.

Hey man I am on your side, I had long hair at that age and so did all my friends, we didn't give a fuck what other people thought. I actually grew my hair long last year and it didn't look good but I already have a girlfriend and she liked it so I wasn't trying to impress anyone at the time.

On a side note if my Mum had of demanded me to do anything I would of laughed in her face although she had stopped trying by the time I was 17.

Why would she do that? Just because you have long hair? She's fucking nuts

Sadly, it seems that you must cut your hair. I know it sucks, but your hair will grow back and when you're 18 you can grow it long and whip it back and forth if it so pleases you:)

I had a slightly similar experience from my grandmother when I wanted to cut my hair. This was last year, sometime in the summer, but many years before I had voiced my opinion on wanting to get it cut. Of course, my grandmother was against it, but my mom was pretty laid back about it. Just when I thought I had my mind made up, my grandmother said something and a cloak of self-doubt was thrown over me. Needless to say, I didn't get my hair cut. Last year, I couldn't take having long hair anymore and told my mother about how I felt. She was alright with it as long as I didn't get it cut "too-short". My grandmother found out and while I was on a trip with her and her awesome brother in europe, she repeatedly attempted to guilt trip me into changing my mind. I refused to listened to her bullshit. When, I got back from the trip she still tried to sabotage me from getting a hair cut. She made up something so I couldn't get it done. She said this in the salon in a very immature and mocking way. I remember after I got home that day my mother and I had a huge argument with the woman and two weeks later I finally managed to get my hair cut.

The weeks leading up to that day (and occasionally many days after the event) she would repeatedly ask me me Why. Why I was getting my hair cut and she want to her my "true reasons". She is nuts she actually believed that I was cutting my hair to get back at her (she also claimed that he thought that "we" got MY hair cut because it would be easier to manage. Lies all Lies!) I had no alliterative motives. I had always wanted short hair and I was sick and tired of not being allied to be myself. I couldn't take that crap anymore!

When I came in the salon that fated day and told the girl that washes my hair that I was going to cut my hair, it spread around the shop like a wildflower. When it came time for me to get finally get my hair cut, the workers were taking before shots and then when it got cut, after shots! We were all excited except for my grumpy grandmother. She was complained about how I was "trying to hurt her" (Etc.) and we tried to ignore her. For some reason, I ended up getting the ends curled up like That Girl. I really think my grandmother was trying to get back at me when she suggested that. What the fuck was I thinking?!

At that time, I had my hair cut to my shoulders and the second to last time I went to the salon, I had it cut to where my neck stops:) Anyway, Good Luck!

    You can't live anywhere else.
Cutting your hair is conditional upon living there.
I don't think you have much of a choice.

Even though your mom is in the wrong, I would suggest cutting your hair. Also consider getting a part time job and saving up so you can move out and grow your hair as long as you want.

    Cut your hair, I guess.
Generally, I can agree with the "my body, my choice" argument, but while I will get flack for it, you're not even legally an adult and she has a right to have rules in her house.

I am not saying she is right, not by a long shot, but if your hair is more important to you than having a place to live, then maybe you need to re-evaluate your priorities. I'd recommend the same to your Mom.

That is crazy and completely fucked up. It is not normal to kick you out just because your hair is not the right length. I think she was probably looking for a reason to kick you out anyways and this was her excuse.

You'll attract more girls by cutting your hair plus get to stay. I wish I hadn't have gone through the whole long hair phase.

Just cut your hair. You ARE still a minor and you're living under her roof. Long hair looks stupid on boys anyways! I have yet to see one who can pull it off!
