Is it normal my friend is so unresponsive?

I have this friend. We see each other a lot. As in school and work. In person she talks normally and converses normally. However when we talk online or texting she would just respond with vagueness.

Example:
Me: how was your day?
Her: okie

And I would not get anything else out from her. Perhaps I expect too much but could she possibly be faking it around me in person?? Fake being my friend? And one important factor. I tried asking her out 4 times and was shut down all the way. But we promised to remain as close friends and continue to hang out leaving that problem aside. She wouldn't ever be the first to initiate a conversation online or through text. In person she would talk to me. Like tell me secrets and her problems.
