Is it normal my dad makes fun of my mother?

My dad is 57. He's lightheartedly discouraging to her in a way. It makes me feel weird when I visit them. He also has never hit anyone in all four marriages, but jokes about hitting her with a hammer or telling me to look away. He has two guns but they're for protection. He also makes comments about his side of the family and family name being better than my mom's. I have both names. When he compliments me he talks about my attributes that are similar to the women in his family. is it normal for dads to nitpick and jokingly deprecate their significant other?

    Well if she's not ok with it then yeah, I'd tell him to find some new material. Maybe he's just oblivious to the notion that what he is saying is offensive to the both of you.

      Half of the time she calls him mean and he laughs it off.

    He sounds like a total arsehole and how do you know he didn't hit any of his four wives? Hitting someone with a hammer is nothing to joke about.

    Don't laugh at his "jokes" and it would be good to check with your mother when he's not around and see how she feels about his behavior. If he says stuff like this in front of you I'll bet he says and maybe does a lot worse when there's no-one around.

      I never laugh, I just look neutral since I don't want him to know I'm uncomfortable. She sometimes says she's getting tired of him but doesn't want to be alone.

    Nope, my dad doesn't do that to my mom. I think what's most important is how your mom feels about this. No offense, but he sounds like a prick.
