Is it normal my dad is obsessed with incense?

My dad is a previous smoker so I'm worried his new habit to help him "calm down" is just a replacement for smoking. It stinks and makes me cough. How do I get him to stop if it isn't normal or just to get me to stop coughing? My family think I'm exaggerating when I cough when he does it. I'm not. It friggen stinks and I do don't want the particles in my fucking lungs and on my clothes.

What do you mean by you are worried it is a replacement for smoking?

Smoking is incredibly dangerous. Replacing with nearly anything is better.

If a criminal turned to music would you be worried it was a replacement for crime?

I really don't understand this concern.

For the rest of it, I'm sorry you have to live in that house. Maybe try to keep it far away from your room so you have somewhere safe to be. And move out asap.

    • He quit a LONG time ago probably 12 years about now but still shoving something else in its place is bad isn't it? The particles that come off of that has to have some type of respiratory effect right?

Ok. Incense is not a natural medicine. The scent that they mix with it is medicinal but real incense is made by mixing the medicinal herbs or oils with a mixture of what is essentially cow shit and then dipping sticks in it several times to form an incense stick.
Thats how they originally made them. But now they commonly use charcoal powder i think, although the shit sticks are becoming increasingly popular again. Find out which ones your dad is using.

Well incense has a natural drug in it that actually effects our mood. Look into it. And so he might be leaning on it to help his addiction. So on one hand if it's helping your dad and it's working for him you should appreciate that he's trying to stop. On the other, if you tell him to stop lighting so much, make sure you let him know that you understand it helps him but it's just too much

Is this the actual incense you burn for smell? Or is this the incense that you smoke AKA spice?

Incense comes in the form of a stick, cone, or powder that's lit and then smolders, giving off a stream of smoke which fills the space with scent. You don't "smoke" incense in the sense that you inhale it. That would be completely nuts.

So you shouldn't have any doubts about whether he's burning incense or smoking a drug.

Some people do find real incense irritating. In the ceremonial magic community (by which I mean people who perform magical rituals, not those who pull rabbits out of a hat), it has been noticed that there seems to be a high incidence of respiratory problems. Burning incense puts particles into the air, and some people are sensitive to those particles.
