Is it normal milkshakes give me a stiff tongue?

I LOVE chocolate-cherry milkshakes from Dairy Queen but every time I have one, I get a stiff tongue the next day, which really hurts and feels as though I'm about to get the flu. I put off having one as long as possible because of the resulting pain, not to mention the bomb of calories that I don't need.

This is a stupid question and not something I'd ask just anyone but you guys are the cat's pyjamas when it comes to answering weird things like this:

Do I have a weakling tongue or is this normal?
Should I be doing tongue-stretches as part of a pre-milkshake workout?
WTF?

A stiff tongue and pain because of drinking a milkshake the previous day isn't normal.

The only thing I can think of is that you could be allergic to an ingredient used in the specific milkshake you buy from Dairy Queen - possibly an additive.

I agree with disthing. the tongue is one of the first places we see signs of an allergic reaction then throat. It often swells or stiffens you shouldn't tempt fate with this be sure you don't have issues with gluten because faux milk shakes are loaded with it to thicken it.

Allergic reactions can give subtle warnings at first before there is a possible fatal reaction...trust me I know. Plus dying by chocolate cherry milkshake is not the way to die. (>~<)

    • It happens with home-made milkshakes too. It is the strong sucking action that does me in, not additives or fast-food.

How weird. You must suck pretty hard to cause a stiff and painful tongue the following day.

lol someone sucks! Literally =D funny but there is gluten even in the stuff you use for homemade shakes "Anonymous" (Ice creams)Only recently have they begun removing gluten because of people having the same issues as you. Only other thing I can think of is you being a diabetic or carrier and not know it you say it's after shakes right?

I have never heard of sucking giving a stiffy...oh wait...nevermind!

Someone once told me that good tongue exercise was to cut an orange in half and then eat the orange using your tongue only.

It wasn't for the purposes of milkshake, though.

What do think about the Land o' Lakes lady or the Chiquita Banana woman?

All excellent choices. Mama Celeste is going too far though.

Reading some of these IIN posts makes me think the laughing cow could be an option for some here.

I was thinking that this might be an allergic reaction to a ingredient, but maybe it's not an "reaction", but a side-effect instead? The thing about fast food is that a milkshake is not like you'd make it at home. At home, you'd get a blender and use a couple of scoops of ice-cream and some syrup. However, their food consists mostly of chemicals, additives and many other dangerous things that shouldn't even be considered "food". You best bet is to stop eating/drinking fast food and eating healthy.

If that's the case, you could use a spoon instead of a straw. If you still have a stiff tongue, I think you should see a doctor.

No, that doesn't sound normal to me. The worst I ever get is the occasional brain freeze. Your 'pre-milkshake tongue exercises' did give me a laugh though :)

    Don't eat the milkshakes.

  • Maybe just cut out the milkshakes? Hahaha. Especially if you think you don't need the calories. It's also good discipline to be able to give up things we like a lot.
