Is it normal men don't laugh at women's jokes?

I've heard men say women can't be funny, noticed on facebook that when I'm "bantering" (god I hate that word) with male friends who are coming up with cliched or unfunny jokes, I still get shouted down.

So I open two accounts on a forum, one female, one male. I start posting, and I find that the female account is largely ignored or patronised, but the male one gets wild acclaim. I find this disturbing, but I put it down to coincidence. I eventually decide to engage the two accounts with each other, publically, and stage a argument between the two. The male account's posts in this argument are repeatedly thumbed up, get loads of praise and lols etc, while the female account's posts are called "shit banter" "not funny" and so on. Even though they are both from the same person, me! I begin to be annoyed, and start to assign the male account the less amusing or witty comments. Same thing happens. I will point out here that I didn't make any gender distiction in terms of the "banter", like I didn't have the female account make "feminine" jokes or anything, the tone was exactly the same for both.

Is it normal that guys ignorejokes when they are made by women and don't find them funny, even if they are as good or better than the jokes made by men?

I'm female by the way.

When I started here, the majority of people thought I was female. I don't think there was a huge difference in how people treated me, but there was a small difference. People thought I was a militant feminist (which is interesting, because whether or not you're a feminist is independent of gender. I could still be a militant feminist even now) and they were afraid to make jokes. When people found out I was male, they felt more comfortable with me and were happier to joke with me (or at my expense).

I wonder whether your comments were ignored due to people's fear of being judged on the tenets of political correctness. I hate political correctness as much as anyone else but, because of it, are women are being cast as po-faced, litigious harridans who can't or won't take a joke? If so then political correctness is not only failing each of us, it's failing even itself.

That's some interesting results from your experiment.
I find that when I'm on a forum I don't automatically look out for the gender of the person before I read their post or decide if their post is funny or not. Most of the time I'm oblivious of the gender when I'm evaluating the post. Sure there are certain clues in the name of the poster or the content of the post but in most cases where it is vague I don't go out of my way to find out.

But, how do you know exactly if the auidience were all male? Maybe they were female?

You should of linked up with both pages so we can see for ourselves.

Well, honestly, I don't think women are really funny, myself, and I'm female. Sometimes women are funny and every now and then you'll come across one with good jokes, but typically women's jokes are a little boring in flat. Men's jokes are typically a goofy, ridiculous humor which, for me, is the funniest humor. I never find myself watching female stand up comedies either; just males. I guess females, for the most part, just aren't that funny...and not just to guys either.

It's because women shouldn't be on the internet, they should be in the kitchen.

I know exactly what you mean. I've noticed that when I'm dating a new guy, if I say anything funny, I can actually see in his face, him trying to hold it in and not laugh. I don't see what the big deal is?

Maybe it's something like this. There's this kid in your group, they are kind of a goofball, the constant comedian. So when they say something, you're already expecting to laugh. But then this other person in the group doesn't usually say much. That person tries to make a joke, but you're caught off guard and don't laugh. Everybodys seen an example of this in there lifetime I'm sure. So when it comes to gender, the female gender isn't expected to be as funny, so what you say in girl post is probably taken more seriously than comically. I'm a girl, and I've made a name for myself with my friends as being 'funny' that's weird to say about myself lol But noone gives me an odd look and they know when i'm joking, but sometimes I forget not everyone knows me that way, and I made a joke to a guy one time at a festival and he looked shocked xD

Interesting psychological experiment. You should repeat the trial on different forums, and multiple times on the same forum in different places and see if the results are always the same. X3

I almost wonder if you were doing this on reddit. Being a female redditor myself, I've noticed a lot of times I get thumbed down or attacked, or *my favorite* called a karma whore for posting something that gets a lot of upvotes or gets near the front page. Well what am I supposed to do, post content I know nobody will want to see to keep my karma purity?

But I think that can be taken down to maturity in a lot of cases. A lot of people on the internet (again especially reddit) who are likely to be the ones commenting and voting and doing these things are probably young teenagers, trying to be cool. So they take all the trolly kind of humor and attitude and actually apply it to their mindset, taking it more seriously than it's meant to be.

    That's my partial theory, anyway.

women are just usually not as funny as guys, that's just genetically created this way, they just don't need to be funny..

    Not just online.

I notice in my daily life that men are just naturally funny whilst women are not.

Actually online I oft' get mistaken for a male, and end up with a shit ton of male friends whereareas all the girls hate me.

Well that's what interests me, my "experiment" seems to prove that it's not neccessarily that women aren't funny, it's that even if they are they aren't percieved as being funny. Oftern when I'm being ironic or sarcastic people don't even recognise that I'm joking...whereas my male alter ego gets mad love for the exact same posts.

      Grim!

      • Would you consider yourself to be a funny person in real life or do you find that being a female "limits" the reach of your humor?

I know plenty of women that are very witty and funny. But many who think they are and completely arent. Same thing with men.

        • Yeah, I'm funny, but yeah, I think being female limits the reach of my humour. Often when I make a joke, people take it seriously, whereas if a guy made the same joke, they'd realise it was intended as a joke and laugh.

I've definitely gotten "you're, like, the only girl I know who can make me laugh so hard. Most girls aren't funny".

    Sigh.

Honestly, it's a really witty social experiment you've got there! Kudos :)

Unfortunately it is common. A lot of female comedians (probably all) have gotten the "You're funny for a girl" or "I didn't know women could be funny." But you need to look on the bright side. Things are getting drastically better. Look at the female comedians of our time: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Sara Silverman, Wanda Sykes, Kristen Wiig. They're successful and they've proven that women can be funny to any audience. There's a reason why the movie Bridesmaids was such a big deal. It was a comedy from a woman's point of view that both female and male audiences enjoyed. Why? Because it was fucking hilarious.

I'm pretty sure I read something once that there had been some research into this, something relating to women not needing to be funny to attract a mate or friends, whereas it tends to be the opposite in the case of men.

Christopher Hitchens wrote an wonderful piece on this years ago that he copped a lot of (humorless I must say) flack for but he made a fairly convincing argument.

I always thought it was completely the opposite! I have never had any experience as a woman so I guess my opinion was completely lacking in experience.

I am going to start paying attention more closely now, as you have raised a topic that interests me!

That's why I don't bother to correct on the internet when I'm assumed to be a guy, for one thing it's always kind of annoying when a user has to announce their female (unless it makes an important difference) but also that I guess males are more accepted on the internet, plus I think some jokes are just better delivered by a man (because girls are generally expected to be all cute and sweet or w/e else)

I thought it was the other way: females don't like male humour especially if it's "dirty" humour. Oh well...
