Is it normal: it annoys me when people say white and african american

First of I'm not racist, but everyone gets on to me when I say black instead of African American. I mean no one calls me Caucasian? They call me white and to everyone that's all right but if I say black I'm either racist or politically incorrect .

P. S I'm fine with people calling me white. I just hate it when some one gets on to me when I call someone black.

  • Caucasians should be called "European Americans".

I agree, African American is stupid. Not all blacks are African!! Challenge people who tell you this to go up to a Jamaican guy and call him African. Or a Haitian person. Or a dominican person. These people all tend to look black but are clearly not African and most likely wouldn't want to be called African. It's pretty offensive for someone to assume to know your heritage based on your skin color. I wouldn't appreciate it if people always called me an Australian American just because I'm white.

    • Excuse me. Please do a little research about the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade,as your take on "what is" (history) is not accurate. The slave trade from Africa gained a foothold in the countries you have mentioned.

I don't want to put words in people's mouths but I think wigsplitz was talking about how people see themselves now, rather than how their great-great-great-great-grandparents saw themselves.

Why is it up to white people to decide how far back in their history a black person should go to define who they are?

The real irony of this situation is that the mitochondrial DNA of every white European, North American, and Australasian can be traced back to something like two dozen black women from central Africa. If anyone should be deciding how far the apple fell from the tree, it should be the tree itself and not we white apples that fell furthest.

"wigsplitz" stated that black people in Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic were "clearly" not of African descent. I stand by my original comment and correction. Perhaps if wigsplitz made that argument about Australian Aborigines, it would make more sense.

I don't think she used the word "descent". To reiterate my point, it's about how people see themselves now. I see myself as white even though my descent (and yours) is African.

I don't feel African. I feel English, and while I accept that the whole world is from African stock, the English or the American part of things is the smaller part of it. Shouldn't people be English African and Australasian African and American African as opposed to the other way around? Or maybe, because we're all African, just dispense with the African and call people either what they are now, or what they want to be called?

Why are we arguing over this? I don't think our viewpoints are all too different. And, if they are, why don't we agree to disagree, knowing that we probably think roughly the same thing anyway.

Note of humour - South African African. How on earth does that work?

            • I am not "arguing" with you, dappled. I never argue over things like if the Earth is round or flat. Some things are patently obvious to anyone with a 3rd grade education. All of your high flown rhetoric about mitochondrial DNA and your semantics rebuttals are... irrelevant and off center..."way" off center. Furthermore, I don't argue points of fact. I am trying to educate you. I am not sitting in some English mansion, sipping Pennyroyal tea while my servant massages my feet as I type this... I happen to "know" some blacks from the Carribean and the Dominican Republic. They have stated an affiliation with both their "African" ancestry and with their current country's past. Some do call their self "African" and some do not. It is not any other culture's concern, right, or responsibility to decide if various racial names "fit" these people or not or if certain names are "Stupid". This goes for blacks living in America, too. Who are you to "definitively" state what their name should be? It is crystal clear to everyone with eyes what wigsplitz has posted. Case, hopefully, closed.

I'm not sure of the thinking on this. We don't really do that in other countries. It's just white or black or whatever. Maybe people think it sounds more respectful to say African American. Personally, I find it less respectful. It's like saying black people can't just be called "American" like anyone else. They're a special type of American that has to be pointed out. I may be getting the wrong end of the stick there, but just saying how it sounds to an outsider.

They need to be aware of the fact that there are more versions of black than ''African american." Some aren't American, just African. Some prefer the country in Africa they're from like Somalia-Somalians for example. Also, Haitians are black, and Haiti isn't in Africa...

I suggest and in any situation why you get offended to ask yourself why this offends you.

In Africa, there is a wonderful word for them that starts with a K. But they will likely take offense if you use it to their face since they all hate Whites anyway.

youll never get a clear understanding, just say what you want to say and if people get offended, tell them to call you whatever they want and you wont be offended.

I know people that have a problem with wearing "native pride" clothing at schools... I don't really care, but I can see their point.

I hate people that're politically correct to an obnoxious point.I say black, I say white, what more is their to it? Freedom of speech concurs the right in which we are allowed to speak without fear of restrainment. Follow this golden, yet painfully forgotten rule our ancestors[more or less] shared with us.

LOL, yeah, isn't that the truth!

We say one little thing considered ''hurtful'' and they jump on it. Like, are they not black? I understand your point! But what I don't understand is why they get upset. Like you said, we refer to ourselves as white.

I don't see the point in all this.

Oh and a nigger is to a black person as trailer trash is to a white person!
