Is it normal if it feels like something is trying to kill you?

Over the past few years, I've felt like something is literally out to get me. Whenever I'm asleep I'll randomly wake up in the middle of the night & won't be able to breathe or anything. I'll be smothered in the covers & I won't be able to move. I try to scream for help but nothing will come out. I can only see. I'm terrified. What to do?

Honestly, it sounds like you might have sleep paralysis... When you go to sleep, the body naturally paralyzes itself so that you don't roll around and hurt yourself. Also, your breathing is set to a set rhythm that's slower than your waking breath. Sometimes, you wake up and your body doesn't register that. So you can experience the inability to move and take a deep breath. I've heard of people wanting to scream and not being able to. Also, you can get weird hallucinations while in this state, because your brain thinks you're asleep... you can literally dream with your eyes wide open. I've been told the easiest way to get out of this is to calm down and fall back asleep... When you wake up, you should be out of it.

I'm a very nervous person, it doesn't happen as much anymore. I only get woken up when I'm smothered in the covers & I'm unable to breathe.
