Is it normal if i'm afraid i'm going to develop schizophrenia?

My mother has schizophrenia. I was sent to live with my aunt and uncle when I was 7 because she couldn't take care of me due to her mental illness. When I was growing up my aunt (I call her my mom) told me that I was just like my biological mother whenever I did something wrong. I wasn't told she had schizophrenia until I was about 16. I'm in my last year of college and have a pretty successful lifestyle, but I'm still afraid that I will develop Schizophrenia one day. Is this normal?

My grandmother was schizophrenic and it crossed my mind too, so I did the research. The chances of me developing it are about 4%. With one schizophrenic parent, you have about a 12% chance. I would strongly advise against doing anything which may up this percentage (particularly drugs).

I feel similar. My family has told me that schizophrenia runs in my family and it seems to skip a generation. My great grandmother had it, my aunt is bipolar, two of my uncles are schizo and my mom and other uncle have paranoia tendencies, my sisters show some signs of it I think although I haven't researched it much myself. They say they often will make up words for another word without realizing it. Like they will say "look at the mernger" but they mean to say window. They also say they sometimes hear voices or whispering. I'm affraid my children will have this problem. It doesn't affect my sisters lives any though. But it has caused a lot of problems in my aunts and uncles cases.

if u haven't developed it in your late teens and early 20's then i wouldnt worry. just research symptoms of schizophrenia and keep a close watch for them just in case-- especially if you start having psychotic symptoms or are hearing voices that are telling you to do things (or voices in general which is another illness).

good luck! just dont worry too much because if you let it consume you then that may turn into paranoia. if you do however develop it then it is not the end of the world. just remember that you are not the only one who has developed it. there are people and facilities out there to really help you. and most importantly there is medication.

Schizophrenia isn't the kind of disease you can inherit just like that. There are many genetic/social/environmental factors involved.
Which all interact with one another, somehow.
I advice you to find out what those factors are and take them out of your life.It might reveal itself as an impossible task tho.
By the way, telling you "you are just like your mother"? So not cool.
Reason number one:Because you should be proud of your biological mom no matter what. She gave you your life and you shouldn't think less of her in anyway for any reason.
Number two:Telling you that you are just like your mother won't help you in any way to avoid the illness. It will just make you paranoid.

To develop schizophrenia you must have what psychiatrists call "schizoid personality".
    You can look it up.
Schizoid personality:characterized by a lack of interest in social relationships,a tendency towards a solitary lifestyle, secretiveness, and emotional coldness.Introversion.
1:Unsociability, quietness, reservedness, seriousness, and eccentricity
2:timidity, shyness with feelings, sensitivity, nervousness, excitability, and fondness of nature and books
    3:pliability,kindliness,honesty,indifference, silence,and cold emotional attitudes.
My guess is you will develop "It".
You can either develop it at age 30 or at age 50 or at age 60 but it has to come up some day.

It isn't worth worrying about. If you are going to develop it there isn't much you can do to prevent it. Just keep your brain healthy by eating properly.

Thanks for the help you guys. I left out that my grandmother also has Schizophrenia and some of my half siblings do as well. I'm in my early 20's so I'm still at risk for developing it. I pride myself in being an individual and I'm afraid that if I inherit this illness, I'll have to depend on people for the rest of my life.

My biological mother who has it does not have a job. She just sits at home and lives off of government benefits. I go to school full time and work part time and she lives in a nicer house than I do. How is that fair? She could be ok if she took her medicine but, she refuses to.

it is possible to develop a mental illness if there's a history of it in your family. have you shown any signs of it? if not, you're probably ok.

It's normal to worry but just because your grandmother has it doesn't really mean you will too. My grandmother is a skitzo among other things but so far I haven't had that problem and I don't think I will.

Unless something horribly traumitizing happens to you, you won't develop it. I doubt anything so bad would happen to you. It's about the same chance that you'll be a millionaire.

Horribly traumatizing? Like being taken away fro his mentally ill mother at the age of 7?

You can't "catch" it. You don't have it, and you won't develop it.

    • em no but it can be passed down from imediate family so you cant catch it but it can progress on you in your life its the same with many mental illneses

He/ she wasn't asking if they could "catch it"....I think we all know that that is not possible. This person was concerned about "Developing it", which can certainly happen. This disease most commonly manifests in the mid to late 20's...
