Is it normal i want to do this to pay off my tax debt?

Well, for 2010 I was completely screwed over for taxes. I'm a college student but work part time and all my parents paid for was my cell phone and car insurance. All books, gas, rent, food, utilities, and whatever else was paid by me. When you only make a little less than 20 grand a year, I rack up a bit of credit card debt just scraping by. My parents claimed me for that tax year without me knowing, so now I owe the government $2,000. is it normal I want to post ads on craigslist to hook so I can pay my debt? I'm not that bad looking and it would be easy to put a red light out on my porch.

Sounds like you need a roommate, dude.

I think your parents should be the ones to pay you the $2000. They claimed you as a dependant without your permission, so the consequences fall onto you and they expect YOU to pay the penalty? Nu-uh. That's bullshit. You need to tell your parents to not pull such stupid shit and that they need to pay up, because you can not be held to blame because they wanted some quick cash, that's crap.

Give them the IRS report and tell them that they need to pay the penalty. This isn't your fault. If they won't do it, try to find a cheap tax representative (or you can call the IRS yourself) and tell them what happened. It IS possible to negotiate a deal with the IRS, many people are just too timid to do it. I'm right with you, I work full time, make less than $20k and believe me, $2000 is a lot of money when you're at my level. Good luck.

Also, have you looked into getting a pell grant? You really should if you haven't already.

    • Thank you for your help. I looked into a pell grant, but I don't think I'd be eligible. If you're under 24, you have to input your parents income as well. I'm not sure exactly what they make a year, but it's quite a bit. I won't get awarded anything. In the government's eyes, I'm well off.
But yes, it is hard making 20k...that's just my gross income so minus all the taxes taken out..it probably comes out to 17k maybe...and with school in session, I make quite a bit less now than during the summer. I did tell my mom how much I owe and her response "I guess you expect us to pay for it blah blah blah being responsible blah blah blah." I will try calling the IRS. Thanks again!

Your parents sound like a class act.

I would suggest you talk to them again before you call the IRS. Inform them that you're going to have to call the IRS and inform them of what they did (which is technically tax fraud) so you can get a break on the payment if they don't help you pay back the $2000. If that still doesn't phase them, get their information, go to the IRS and tell the IRS that you can't pay and the tax debt is a result of tax fraud on the part of your parents.

And you have to be 24 to get the Pell Grant in your state? That doesn't sound right. Have you tried going to fafsa.gov? Input your tax information there, I make the same income as you (17k after taxes) and live on my own and I qualified for a Pell Grant and am getting one and I have been on the grant since I was 18. When I turned 20, I no longer had to give them my parents' tax information, (but even then I still qualified). Pell Grant is a federal grant and I'm sure the same rules apply in every state... but go to the website and check it out anyway if you haven't already.

I agree with her that's BS. My dad tried to claim me when I was paying for my own school, rent, food, etc etc.

There has to be a better way.

  • Tax laws are probably different in my country than yours, but here if your parents claim you as a dependent, then that usually means you are not old enough to do your own taxes, therefore you don't have to pay any taxes.

Why are you still expected to pay $2000?
If your parents are the ones who files the tax report, then they are the ones who would owe the money, not you.

    • For here, if you make a certain amount, you have to pay. I remember in high school, whatever was taken out of my check over the year, I got it back but not anymore.

As an added bonus, when tell you parents what you did, they'll never want to scam you out of a tax deduction again.

Do you live with your parents? if you do then i think they are allowed to register you as dependent... and if you don't then I'm not sure how they managed that.

Technically you don't have to pay it all of if you ever owe money what you can do is wait until next years taxes are due and they will deduct the $2,000 from the refund amount you get. It sounds a little weird that you would owe that much, at most it should be 1,500 which is usually the amount of deductions for children. If you filed first then there tax return should have been rejected because you claimed yourself as a dependent, and you would have had to file the 1040x form to correct your form to allow them to claim you. If your under 18 you can be legally claimed by law.

I wouldn't say it isn't normal because I know of many doing stuff like this to pay things off. It may not be the healthiest for you physically or emotionally but if it helps. I think you should look into some other options first though before you do something you may regret.

Hooking is fine with me, but using Craigslist really is dangerous- and not in a funny, laugh-it-off way. Rape and gang rape happen, and so does theft- people not paying for your "services." And if that were to happen, there's no going to police. Just be safe! And if you do make an add, post your limitations, if you have any. Ex; no anal, or no toys, etc.

If you're going to go that route, strip, don't hook. Stripping is legal, safer in many ways, and you don't have to worry about hating yourself for the rest of your life!

I was working part time in college making $220 a week and I the only debt I have are my school bills. You must live a high class life to have credit card debt. You must realize, you must make sacrifices in order to be independent. Lose the credit cards, you can make it without them.

    • I really can't. I love the credit card because before, I'd run low on money a few days before my next pay check and let me tell you, it's not fun deciding between food or gas. Also, my car isn't the best and I was lucky to have it when car repairs are needed without any notice.

just remember... iirc the cops DO look through CL too so don't be surprised if you get arrested for prostitution.

and don't be surprised if you attract the wrong kind of customer. meaning... customers who might be rougher than you want, or ones who abuse or hurt you.

it might not be the magical solution you think it will be.

in all honesty... if that's the route you want to go, you might want to consider the adult industry. stuff that's legal - such as stripping or doing porn. if you don't mind video evidence haunting you that is.

        O yeah.

That's why in areas in the US where it's legal... the prostitutes have to have routine medical examinations - in fact it's considered to be part of the operating costs of the brothel IIRC.

        • Avant-Garde

I think the brothels should also test the clients that come in there. It may sound a tad extreme or it may not, but at least it would help to cut down the risk of STDs from both sides instead of just one.

Maybe I'm too naive. Any guys want to do a tiger in the black hole of Calcutta for $20,000?

It's $25,000 if you're kinky too, and want your face ripping off. Or maybe I'll just throw that in as a free gift now and again. :D
