I think it would be an ironic form of justice... Humans have been so anthropocentric, with this attitude that we are the best life form ever to exist, that we have regularly mistreated and dismissed the other species on our planet. Some aliens coming down and trashing the place and then enslaving us would be quite fitting.
Except that we are the best species. What other species does math and builds significant stuff?
Not hardly. We are destroying the very planet we live on with pollution, garbage and nuclear waste and we're slaughtering billions of animals in the name of money. Human beings are a parasitic, destructive species. We're great at destroying the world, that's not something to be proud of.
You think math and buildings are significant because you're a human with an anthropocentric point of view. A beaver believes it's dam is significant because it's a beaver. You think a skyscraper is significant because it's made by a human.
If you remove humans from an ecosystem it flourishes. If you remove mosquitos from an ecosystem, it invariably collapses. Really puts into perspective how "superior" we really are.
"You think math and buildings are significant because you're a human with an anthropocentric point of view."
Yes.
"A beaver believes it's dam is significant because it's a beaver."
No. A beaver doesn't have the cognitive capacity to understand 'significant' in the same way that humans do. A beaver builds a dam because it's instincts tell it to. Planning out and building a skyscraper is significantly more complicated than that.
"If you remove humans from an ecosystem it flourishes. If you remove mosquitos from an ecosystem, it invariably collapses. Really puts into perspective how "superior" we really are. "
If you define 'superior' as being able to keep an ecosystem static (odd definition of superior), then you are correct. Like I have been saying elsewhere in this post, what I think makes humans superior is our capacity to think, feel and imagine.
Isn't this a three ring circus of bloody shenanigans; I didn't know so many IINers were in the sucidal emo 'destroy humans' clique.
I am proud to be human. Possibly the most overlooked blessing is our ability to think, imagine, create. I always wanted myself to be one of the people that uses this to change the world to a better place, as opposed to whining because some others harness this into a force of destruction.
There exist people with no hidden agendas who genuinely give a shit - and I suggest if OP, gyps, and Autumn really want extermination, they practise it on themselves before anyone else.
Anyhow, I thought you were being a bit outnumbered so I sent in some back-up :)
Horray! One more person who doesn't hate all of humanity!
"I suggest if OP, gyps, and Autumn really want extermination, they practise it on themselves before anyone else."
That is one thing I don't get about unironic misanthropes. If they were really serious about what they're saying, and actually practiced what they preached, they should start being terrorists who kill other people.
What other species slaughters it's own by the millions? Or creates bombs that can destroy the planet a gazillion times over (dumbass Putin is building 40 more very modern nukes as I write this)? Or soils where it lives, for MONEY?
Your 'maths and significant stuff' ain't worth the harm this 'best species' does.
The aliens would be dumb shits if they let even one of our monstrous species survive.
"What other species slaughters it's own by the millions?"
What other species has the capacity to do so?
"Or creates bombs that can destroy the planet a gazillion times over"
I ask again.
"Your 'maths and significant stuff' ain't worth the harm this 'best species' does."
I disagree. The only species that really can conceptualize higher morality is humanity. These broad notions of right and wrong would not exist if not for us.
"The aliens would be dumb shits if they let even one of our monstrous species survive. "
You think a species could achieve intergalactic travel without some serious violence in its past? If these hypothetical aliens manage to make it all the way to our planet, chances are that this was only achieved through large conflict.
You can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. If you just leave the eggs out, however, they'll just go bad and you'll end up throwing them away.
I have no idea what the last two paragraphs have to do with anything.
How can you think any species that is destroying it's home for wealth is even moderately intelligent, as a species? How in any possible way could actions like that be considered moral at all, let alone 'higher morality'?
We are an infestation on this planet, and she will be a lot better off after we have been exterminated.
Then we'll see how significant the stuff we built really is.
"The aliens would be dumb shits if they let even one of our monstrous species survive."
"We are an infestation on this planet, and she will be a lot better off after we have been exterminated."
You are a member of this human species infestation, are you happy to include yourself on the list to be exterminated?
"Destroying it's home for wealth"
Do you even understand what you're saying? When humans cut down trees to build houses in the past because towns are easier to live in than forests does that count as "destroying home for wealth?"
What about cultivating farmland? And providing the massive food surpluses that allow for you and I to be alive?
What I was saying about morality is that human beings are the only species we know of who care about it in a "Rule of Law," sort of way. Some other primates can feel shame, but beyond that there's not a whole lot of objective morality in the animal kingdom. Calling humanity immoral is odd because there's no real species that actually aspires to be moral beyond humans.
"We are an infestation on this planet, and she will be a lot better off after we have been exterminated."
On what basis? The earth could not give a shit one way or the other, being as "she" is mostly molten rock, surrounded by a very thin organic layer.
It is solely humanity, out of all species, that aspires to greatness.
The "best" species? Hm. that's not a very scientifically objective statement. Just because we are aware of each other's sentience and have the capacity for creating technology, it does not mean we are "the best." I can think of a multitude of reasons that humanity is quite amoral and myopic. However I can sense that no amount of discussion would alter your mindset, so I won't bother.
"that's not a very scientifically objective statement."
Neither is "I am starting to hate human beings with a passion and think aliens should come down and fuck us up."
I'm saying humans are the best on the basis that we have the capacity to imagine and to work for purposes beyond the self. You might get that in the animal kingdom on the level of pack cooperation, but beyond that, not really. We, as humans, build on the achievements of other humans to achieve beyond what previous humans could imagine.
"amoral and myopic"
As compared to? Starfish? Staphylococcus?
Humanity isn't perfect, but compared to pretty much every other species, I'd say that we are more valuable based on the criteria I outlined above.
"I can sense that no amount of discussion would alter your mindset, so I won't bother."
Lay out your argument before you start making assumptions. I haven't yet seen anything that'll change my mind, but that's not to say I won't.
Well, you could simply avoid human contact, however, the aliens won't want earth if it's already inhabited by people like us. It'd be so much easier to plant things on mars or find a different system than it would to invade humanity. You could try and make it better, but it's not likely to happen.
The independence day sequel comes out soon.. for at least 3/4 of the movie you can enjoy your fantasy, until the inevitable human triumph.
