Is it normal i think twilight is a bad influence?

I know it is targeted is ages 14 and up but this is not a good influence on kids.

For one in the first movie Bella totally ignores the group of normal kids that want to be friends and they still suddenly later want to be her friend.

She goes after the guy who in the first movie is treating her like shit. She is doing it at 16 and running away from home constantly. She has a chance to be with a normal guy who is always nice and she will not be with him.

She graduates at 17 and has a baby after having sex with Edward and has a child. This teaches you to have an abusive boyfriend. It teaches young girls that having babies at 16 is fun and guys will still want you.

This is not how you should treat friends. This is not how a 16 year old should act. Bella without the vampire thing is a really messed up girl.

The reason why I hate Twilight is about how Bella as a role-model encourages girls and young women to act weak and passively and that a strong, omnipotent, perfect man will suddenly arrive and save you from all your problems. Twilight actually reminds me a lot of bad porn. Twilight shows it's readers an unhealthy, excessive and desensitizing level of "perfection" in Edward that nobody in real-life can - or should have to - match, and shows the central female role as weak, submissive and not empowered. Like porn, Twilight isn't damaging if it's taken in context and in doses. Sadly, there are a minority of Twilight fans who are obsessed with it and it would not surprise me if those people grew up with a seriously warped and damaging view of reality.

It's a terrible influence on some kids. Stephanie Meyer is an awful writer, but even that is dwarfed by the thinness of her characters and the appalling message they send to kids.

      This, exactly.

I think that "Bella" is what made the book such a sore read for me. There's this prevailing belief among girls in my generation and younger that their man should be their savior, their Raison D'etre, not just their better half but better for the BOTH of them and I think that Twilight is the cold, cruel representation of what is a generation of young women that were conditioned to be... quite frankly... sought and coddled.

The saddest part is, the absolute saddest part, is that this is what women in my age group (late teens early twenties) see as the "ideal" relationship. This pop culture smut like Twilight only reinforces what is a belief forged from a mixture of decades of a corroding family environment and the recent trend of twisted feminism. It wouldn't be so popular if people couldn't relate their desires.

    • Well if you look at it the concept is generic and I think she just put up the basic fantasy of most teens. Yes she is a terrible writer but she played the "Vampire" market. I agree with everything you say and I was not sure how to put that in my post but I do think it is overall a bad influence for so many reasons.

I agree, Bella is a terrible role model for girls. She has no identity of her own. It's sad it became so popular.

Honestly, I've seen worse influences targeted at children. For example... Adventure Time... And Disney channel, which teaches kids to be loud, slutty, snobbish and obnoxious.

If I watched Twilight as a teenager, the worst I would have done is related to her. I haven't seen the one where she gets pregnant though, so I don't know how influential it is.

    • The last book as well as the last two movie she has sex and get pregnant with Edwards babies. Also how is adventure time bad? Also Disney is suppose to teach good things to children that was why it was invented check out "High school musical" that movie has a great message.

I haven't seen high school musical, so no commento. But the shows on Disney targeted to older kids just seems very obnoxious to me. I can't stand those valley girl voices and the plots are very nonsensical and fast paced. It's like Disney is screaming "turn your brain off. Be materialistic! Be a consumer!" And considering Disney's history I wouldn't be surprised if that is exactly what their goal is. The used to have shows that encouraged originality, maybe they still do (I haven't observed enough to be certain), but never when I tune in.

I watched an episode of Adventure Time the other day and this is what I saw: a girl road a rainbow unicorn creature into a vagina. The were treated like sperm. The were attacked by the woman's eggs, but made it through and were confronted by a pedophile heart. He was violently overthrown by the girl... Now I thought "maybe I just have a dirty mind and these are not dirty metaphors at all." But at the end of the show the rainbow unicorn expresses, "I think I'm pregnant!"

So I was just like, "Wow, that really happened..huh..."

I don't know if all episodes are like that, but that was pretty weird. I just don't know what to think of it. It wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't so obvious and if my 2 year old's eyes were not glued to every second of this episode. Meh.

Don't forget "Cow and Chicken", "Ren and Stimpy" and a few of the shows they broadcasted on "What A Cartoon"; those are the very shows that made me who I am today :D

      • I never got any of the references in those shows. When I was a little kid I just believed it to be funny. When I watch it now I am like "What the hell was I watching".

Yeah; me too. And my parents were always telling me that I didn't need to be watching them but I never understood why. I look back on it now and I'm like "Okay. I get it."

          • Well the movies and the books are very kiddish. The reason they did not want you watching is most likely not for these reason but for the fact they may be against vampires. It is a very watered down version of the old Dracula story line. First movie was very well made and gave me the vibe of lost boys. They made it kid available by the fact his distinguishing features is that he glitters.

Yeah; I definalty agree with that. I don't like how the softened the vampire image. I was always a fan of vampires for the eerie, dark image that they had, and when the "Twilight" series started to take off, it kind of made vampires look bad; not so much dark, anymore, but more for tween/teen girls that were never vampire fans to begin with. I know I sound like one of those nagging vampire fans right now, lol, but it's true. It's very hard to admit being a fan of the vampire without someone affiliating you with "Twilight" not days.

There is actually a lot of controversy about the "Twilight" books/films and the effect it has on young girls. A lot of it has to do with Bella's character and how she is portrayed as this weak, helpless girl that needs a man to lean on. They also don't like how low self-esteem the character is and how she needs to guys to make her feel like she's worthy. I've heard people complaining about it before, so you're definatly not alone. I personally can't stand the Bella character because of that. I think she needs to get over herself, lol.

I agree with you. I mean, there are lots of things out there that could be a bad influence for kids. I don't want to jump on the whole censorship wagon though, would be just as bad as people who blame violent video games and television for crime, when most people who play such things know how to differentiate between fantasy and reality.

At the same time, Edward is a horrible example of a good boyfriend, and all these girls are like "I want a guy like HIM". Really? You want someone who creeps on you through your window and acts controlling as fuck?

    • Yes that is what I was saying. I am not for censoring everything and I am not saying this is the source of all evil in the world. I am saying that if you really look at it and take away the "Monster glamour" These are not very good characters to be modeling ourselves after.

  • I just think the character "Bella" is underdeveloped. There are some good points about the book though. As far as they all knew, vampires could not get a human pregnant. If this book teaches us anything it's that life is precious and something we should not take for granted. We see this concept come up numerous times throughout the series but specifically with the characters Rosalie and Edward.

Before Rosalie was turned she had the perfect life. She was beautiful, young and engaged to (who she thought was) the perfect man. She ends up getting raped by him and his drunk friends and Carlisle saves her, turning her into a vampire. She despises Bella for wanting to become what she is because Bella has what she can't have and what she once did have, life. When they find out Bella is pregnant Rosalie sides with Bella on keeping the baby and protects her. It's a little over the top, because Rosalie doesn't care for the well being of Bella as everyone else does because there's a high chance Bella won't make it through birth but I think this is suppose to show the readers how strongly Rosalie feels about being able to give life a chance to live, that of which was taken from her.

Edward never wanted to turn Bella into a vampire. He wants her to have what he could never have (or so he thought), life. Children. Grandchildren.

There are plenty of other examples that I'm too lazy to think and type up right now but yeah.

That's absurd. You completely ignore a subject and you are debating and implying that something that you have not even watch is stupid.
