Is it normal i think the internet is a sanctuary to some people.

People before were forced to socialize with each other. Though I think we can all probobly agree that some people just don't socialize very well. Also if you are living in a bad eviorment you probobly don't want to socialize. I think the internet is probobly a good thing since instead of becoming serial killers, suicidal, and deranged people can just talk to people and vent. Yeah we have Online bullying but we always had bullying. Some people are just bullys. So if everyone in real life rejects you if you say it online people suddenly pay attention to you.

as a "haven" i guess it has to do with the fact its easy now to find people with similar interests and feelings to talk to than ever before. Probably part of the reason why its more acceptable to be a nerd or part of a certian group that in the past, would have earned you ridicule. To be around those who support can be a big confidence booster, and the "anonminity" of the internet can also make people more comfortable with themselves and allow them to share things that they would be hesitant to express otherwise. I admit a lot has been shared about myself that i may not be so comfortable sharing in person.

Before the interwebs, if people didn't want to socialize, then they didn't socialize. Even with computers being havens for people, they can still turn into psychos or deepen their pre-existing nuttiness. I suppose its nice to be able to 'talk' to people through computers but that isn't really helping their loneliness. They are still alone. They can still be attacked verbally and that can be just as bad as violence for certain people. Then what do they do? Become angry or depressed or suicidal probably, if they aren't already. And not everyone is going to bother with help sites. They will just stew in their warped emotions and the animosity will build.

Some people get so wrapped up in online shit that they disconnect from reality to a frightening extent. Its not healthy. Neither are a lot of things in the real world but that's life.

Their isn't much that you can't do or find online these days and its just creating more and more recluses. Maybe that could be a positive in some ways. I don't know. I suck with words. Siiigh.

    • I never said didnt want to... I was saying people who honestly cant. Like for one HS children who probobly don't have a very good understanding of how to interact with each other to begin with. Dealing with puberty and bullying ecs. I also already said it probobly does not fix everything all of the time but I think in some cases it prevents the issue.

You're right, and I know, I went off a little in another direction.

Actually, I feel like people in this day and age are more disconnected from each other than ever. Social media and hyper exposition have diluted the concept of friendship. People increasingly prefer to text than to speak over the phone; some prefer to text each other while they are sitting in the same room!

I had to dump this one lady; while we were together she would treat her damn phone like an extension of her body and the freaking thing would bleep and ring 24hr/7,

    • I use to have a friend who use to text me 24/7 they got mad if everyone they texted did not text back right away. Would start leaving threatening texts otherwise.

  • Then why won't it let me in!

Last time I tried pass through the computer to the safety of the internet I just squished my nose on the screen.

Exactly. I never saw the internet as a cure or prevention of homicidal tendencies, though. I think isolation would drive anyone mad so you likely have a point there.

    • Exactly, Isolation can drive a person mad. However if its 0 stimulation vs Simulated stimulation isn't any at all better? I mean instead of deciding to kill everyone they could vent with other lonely people on the internet. I mean we even have suicidal websites to talk about issues. I think if that person knew someone was paying attention they might be less likely to kill themselves. Yes, it might be better if they were out socializing but even stimulated interaction is still an interaction. I not saying this eliminates the issue completely but I think it is probobly very helpful in stopping it.

        I agree.

...for stuff that I knew was trivial and unimportant. Then she would have the nerve to text or call me later about something that upset her and I would always ask why the hell she did not address it in person, on the spot. Eventually I got tired of these 'phonegames' and the last few we were together she had that shit on silent or airplane mode.

But as for the internet, since 1995 I have always used an alias or pen name, so as to separate my recreational activities like posting on sites like this from my personal, private life. Now try explaining the importance of anonimity to modern day teens who twit from the toilet and openly post their illegal misdeeds on Facebook and they will look at you like you are crazy; the present generation is all just about hyper exposure and attention whoring.
