Those that say singing is a natural talent are clearly not musicians. As FocoUS said, even Sinatra practiced.
Do you seriously think someone like Whitney Houston just came out her mother's cooter belting out tunes? Or do you think it's more likely that she, Celine (I happen to hate her voice), Lennox, Maynard, Dio, Jackson (Mahalia, not Michael), and Franklin had some sort of vocal training as kids...like say maybe church, school band practice or class choir?
Do you think there's some stereotypical little chinese kid who drops off his mom's tit, crawls to a kiddie baby grand and starts acting like Schroeder from Peanuts?
Second point: Anyone who watches (or better yet, performs) ballet, hip hop, or complex salsa knows that it is VERY FUCKING DIFFICULT to get the mind and body in sync. You can be a fat fuck and sing (ahem, Aretha...Elton...Pavarotti) but you can't really be a fat fuck and dance (unless your name is Jack Black or Kyle Gass). Don't blame it on race either. There are white boys in brooklyn who can pop and lock better than the most bootylicious of Jamaicans or Brazilians. Are you aware that every single culture on this planet dances? That's a fuck-ton of different moves and a good dancer is expected to be able to mimic all of them. Look up Orissi and see just one aspect of complexity (let's not even bring in Butoh, or Swing, or the surprising complexities of moshing).
They're both complex and wonderful arts. It's best to do one or the other. Doing both leads to pop-stars.
I believe the same thing because in my eyes singing is harder to get the hang of. And, it's easier to put personal flavor in singing than dancing. In other words, singing is much more distinctive. Like, you can instantly tell by someone's voice who they are. Not so with dancing. Everyone can pretty much dance the same with training.
I can sing but I can't dance , and I don't think this is true. It's comparing apples and oranges. Singing and dancing are two distinctly separate arts put which also have similarities. Both require great dedication, practice, and coordination of muscles in the body, typically accompanied by and joined with instrumental music.
I HATE the word "talent" it's a honed skill. Do you people honestly think Sinatra was born to sing? He practiced because he loved it. Everyone practices and has voice coach nowadays.
But I think dancing is more impressive. Singers come in all shapes and sizes but dancers have to have strength and stamina to do what they do on top of having skills.
That is kind of why singers get paid more. Although any guy that can dance is automatically sexier to me.
I kind of agree. Singing is a natural talent. I wish I was better at it.
