Is it normal i think prison is a stupid idea?

In my opinion, the concept of imprisonment is stupid. I believe there should be execution for serious crimes and a punishment such as a flogging, beating or a fine for less serious offences. Why does the government waste tax money feeding and clothing evil criminals each year? Instead we could abolish the prison system and spend that money on medical research, the military or education instead. Hell, even labor camps would be a better idea than having prisoners simply sit in cells leeching off hard-earned money from tax-payers.

    Imprisonment is supposed to be a form of rehabilitation. Unfortunately, like most things, money has corrupted the system. Of course gangs and racism just exacerbate the problem. The whole system needs to be cleaned up but money and morally bankrupt individuals will insure that never happens.

    The system we have now sure doesn't work!
    I think people who committee petty crimes should have to repay or replace what they stole/ destroyed, not go to jail. How does that help the victims? I think non violent people don't belong in jail..I think violent rapists and murderers for the most part deserve death. But, there's no easy answer.

    It's about $$$.
    Prison systems used to self sustain.
    More people make more money if they are forced to stay in overcrowded cells.
    They used to plant, grow, raise, butcher, etc.
    Now, it's all processed food.
    My idea, is the 5 year plan.
    1. No crime can have a sentence of longer than 5 years.
    ( outright murder = death. )
    2. During the sentence, you work.
    You learn a marketable skill.
    No sitting around, no weights, no TV crap all day.
    3. Parole is no more.
    Serve your time. Your out. With help finding housing + job.
    4. Re-offenders. Same thing. Same deal.
    5. 3 strikes, you're out. Death.
    Not perfect, but. It's my idea.

    Yeah, in the 70's it was popular opinion to get rid of them, as they statistically increase crime as well as the economic issues you began to touch on. I am sure one day people will think of locking each other in cages as the stupid thing it is and it will become antiquated. Of course I don't support this violence you bring up, that's even worse lol

      But prisons exist because they are an industry, yes there are good cops, judges, and COs but they exist to make money, not to keep us safe or save us money.

    Floggings, beatings, and executions don’t work. It just makes the criminals more angry and vicious. We already tried that in medieval times and it just made things a lot worse.
    The root causes of crime need to be addressed first, which is often what has happened to the individuals to make them act that way. It is true that there are truly evil people (such as rapists, pedophiles, terrorists), but there are a lot of convicted criminals that are just suffering immensely and don’t know what else to do besides vent their pain in criminal activities.

    With what goes on in prison, nobody free should be jealous of anyone in there, doesn't matter if they have "free room and board", that hardly makes it worth it.
