Is it normal i think i look like a dork when i carry a handbag?

I am a woman so it is socially acceptable for me to use a handbag (purse). Even though I know that, I still feel silly when I use one. I've never told anyone that I feel like that but my friends do ask me why I don't have one sometimes. Bags are useful for carrying a lot of junk around when you don't have pockets. I am more comfortable just carrying a small wallet so that I can keep it in a pocket and have my hands and arms free to do whatever. Purses seems either old-ladyish and bulky or pretentious because they boldly sport a designer's brand. I have two purses that I use when I'm traveling or working in an office, otherwise if I need to carry more than my wallet, I use a canvas market bag.

Female: I feel the same way, they aren't for me. 31
Female: I love my purses. 12
Female: I only use one sometimes, but I don't feel weird about it. 14
Female: I will never own a purse. 3
Male: I will never own a purse, they are stupid. 5
Male: Purses are not for me but I think women look normal with them. 17
Male: I have a purse, a man-purse and I wear it proudly. 3

That lovely photo has brought tears to my eyes!

I feel your pain. I hate purses and even if I liked them, I'd probably still look weird with one. A nice wallet or putting your currencies in your pocket seems allot more practical than wearing a big bulky handbag. I wish it were more "acceptable" for a woman to use a wallet and not get harassed over it. I remember that many moons ago my family and psychiatrist forced me into wearing a handbag for the "sake of being a true woman" and I hated it! It was a cheap and ugly thing. It was denim mixed and strange brown material (khaki?) and it had a frayed dragon patch stitched to it. I couldn't keep the dammed thing on my shoulder and I looked horrible with it on. I don't think I ever wore it except once and what a nuisance it was! I eventually gave that monstrosity to my mother. >_<

Haha. The picture was priceless. I dont like bags either. When I finally got my ID, my mom took me purse shopping... It was a weird situation. I looked at every purse there was and hated all of them. What I really wanted was a wallet the kind that guys have so I can take it around with me. Since my mom was with me I had to pick a girly wallet. The only problem is it doesnt fit in my pocket. :/ So in the end I need a purse to put that wallet in because if I keep it in my hands I'm postitive I'll use it.

  • I like purses. I don't do handbags. (Shoulder) I don't like putting things in my pockets because I'm constantly checking to make sure my money etc. is still there. Honestly though I prefer to make someone else hold my money/card in their purse/wallet hehe. Sometimes my shorts don't have pockets and all I need is my ID and card. I dont want to bring a whole dang purse.

I love my purses! Shoulder bags though. I don't buy the high end name brands. To expensive. Just simple plain ones. I will go to Macy's and dig through the sale table. 50 percent off and it's mine!!

I love purses. When I first started using them though, I did feel a bit weird. Especially if they end up slipping down your arm and you end up holding it a bit limp-wristed. I guess it's just different preferences.

I don't know how long I have carried a purse. Normally, when I am out, I carry my wallet, my brush, feminine products (I have a history of having periods sporatically), some pieces of paperwork, game systems and games, drinks, random perfumes my cell phone...

Carrying my wallet and my phone in my pants rather than owning a purse most of my life would have meant certain destruction for my things, mainly because there have been times where I have found myself needing to do things such as jump fences, fit into small areas etc. and to be able to simply drop my purse with my wallet and phone over a jaggedly wired fence and then hop over rather than risk destroying everything with my pants should my attempt be unsuccessful makes carrying the purse rather worth it.

Long story short, I lead a pretty active lifestyle, so it is necessary to be able to store all of my things in one convenient location rather than risk messing them up with my rough activities. But I understand that some women aren't as savage as I am. I wish I knew such skills XD

I carry a purse everywhere. Bitches are jealous of my fashion sense. I wear it better then they do.

It's hard to find a purse that looks nice and not old ladyish, sometimes. Maybe try a messenger bag or other shoulder bag so that your hands are free, or a backpack style purse. Women's clothing usually has really small pockets, or I wouldn't bother either. A big purse can be really nice to carry books and tampons, though.

    • If you read... I use a canvas tote. Thanks for the comment and suggestion though. Feedback is nice.

No problem! I thought a messenger bag might work better than a tote because bags with shoulder straps leave your hands free.

I have one purse that I actually use, a black one to match whatever I wear. I've had it for years upon years. I go everywhere with my baby so I usually just stuff all of our things into the diaper bag, but if I know I'll be out for a minute or two without him, I make sure I have my black purse. I'm pretty sure it's offbrand.

    • Sounds practical. My one purse is apple green and good quality soft leather, so it is not so bad, but it does not go with everything, only blue jeans. A diaper bag can hold a lot of stuff and they come in a variety of styles and colors - interesting option.

I usually take a water bottle and a book everywhere I go. Most purses won't accommodate that. And they tend to occupy one of your hands. I like my backpack. I've been using the same one for nearly 15 years now.

I'm not a purse pursen either. When I was younger I carried a lunchbox for a bit. My favorite was my ammo can. You can beat people with of if necessary and it doubles as a seat. A good thing.Of o do use one these days, its one of many that I've made myself so they are awesome and in no way could I be a dork while sporting one of these unique gems.

I'm ambivalent about bags, tbh... I like looking at them and do have a small collection of the things, including one with a "designer" brand, of sorts (does Milkfed count?).

All of them have something that makes them seem unique (in my eyes) in a trashy way and I often choose a bag going by that. I try and think of how comfortably it fits me, but don't always bear this in mind.

I tend to overpack them to the point that they break. My mum's said that you can tell how much I like a handbag by how wrecked it is...

I'm slowly growing used to the idea of handbags you carry in your hand, but I will NEVER understand the appeal of clutches without detachable straps... it's impossible to keep an eye on them and they really cramp your style in the club, unless you like asking a friend to keep an eye on it for you the whole time you're there or hand it into the cloakrooms.
If the bag is in the cloakroom, what do you do when you want to buy yourself a drink (unless you keep your money in the gusset of your knickers or down your bra or something)?!
If you're wearing no underwear at all and only carrying a clutch, you either have to hold it all night or reduce yourself to asking every man that comes your way to buy you a drink....

    *SMFH*

    P.S. I like the picture!

    Haha, nice picture:D!

And I've only ever had shoulder bags before, if that counts? I don't think I'd feel entirely comfortable with a bag like the one in the picture, although that might be because I'm not used to them.

I'd say it's normal. Just because you're the target audience of a product, it doesn't mean that you have to like it.
