Is it normal i risk my life to avoid mandatory service?

In my country it is mandatory for men to serve as soldiers for 12 months. For years, I had found ways to avoid it but with new laws it was nearly impossible.
I used to be very fat, I was just losing weight and started to look like a handsome human being again. But instead of getting separated from my job which I love and my family to serve, I gained about 10 kilograms in about six months so I became overweight again.
Instead of serving as a soldier, I risked my health, threw away the results of the painful diet I had been adhering for about two years and now my old clothes even don't fit. Is it normal?

I suppose it depends on the country you're living in. If there is an active war, then I'd probably do the same thing. If there isn't, and one is likely to happen any time soon, then I'd just get the year of service over with.

Are there no alternatives that would be acceptable to you? Volunteer in a social service, aid for the elderly/infirm, etc?
If not, in the US armed forces at least, you can be made a medic if you have moral or ethical objections to being a soldier.
If it's just because you don't want to or are afraid, then you are going to have to decide if living in your country is worth the year of service to your country.
