Is it normal i quit my job due to abusive coworkers?

I was working for a company that sends you to places to work and one of these places was this 5 star restaurant that is very hierarchial and strict. If you're wearing nailpolish, they'll make you remove it and you have to buy parts of the working outfit yourself (like tights, eventhough they constantly break since you need to dodge places and run in them constantly). My supervisor had favorites and for some reason, I wasn't one of them so whenever something went wrong, she suspected me. Also it was considered normal for workers in a higher position (like a cook for example) to be really aggressive to, ridicule and disrespect those in lower positions (like some waitors) and treat them like a nobody while sucking up to guests and higher ranking workers.
I worked there for about 2 years but then last weekend, I couldn't take it anymore. There was this big event and they were all sucking up to famous guests and allowing higher ups to see red carpet appearances while again waitors like me weren't even allowed a break until 7hours into the shift and I couldn't do my job as well as I wanted because this stupid bartender who should supervise me was constantly showing his contempt of me, not willing to give clear directions or speak to me in a way for me to hear because he felt so far above me, to the point of others noticing, yet considering it normal there.
So I got so fed up with the place, I didn't go to my next shifts, cancelling super short in advance so they'd see how they can get along without somebody like me doing a ton of work for them and I hope the place broke down.
I've never been in such a dramatic situation so I was curious about others opinions.

2 years? I can't even believe you made it that long with such snooty people. Good for you for quitting, and good luck finding a better job.

This is not normal. You should have went over their head and complained and if not you could have taken them to court for hostile working conditions.

i would have sabotaged the event, like put a laxative in the dessert, then the place would be accused of causing food poisoning & be shut down by the health department. sweet revenge!

I put up with a place like that for 2.5 years. I thought it was normal. My next few jobs have been working for much nicer people. It's so much better, and I've been much more successful. Your last place had a toxic culture; good on you for getting out when you did.

    • Yes, now that I have had a new job for a while, I can't believe I actually put up with them for that long, but back then, it seemed normal since they kept pretending it was. Crazy.

its normal, ive done that too. Twice. Both jobs however were very great for me, now that i look back at them and compare it to where im working now. The biggest problem was me, thinking i was above everyone else and that i deserved just as much or even more.

I only wanted just as much and look at me now... I cant find a "better" job because i quitted the best ones.

I hope that quitting that job doesnt mess you up too much financially and you find something that you enjoy =D

Ethics is a big part of job choice for me. I could never be happy working for people who behave or expect me to behave in ways I do not believe in. Of course, with the low morality rate of big companies, sometimes you have to make do with what you can.

Some people can actually find jobs they enjoy. Life's too short for that kind of bullshit.

Many jobs I have worked have had insecure, ineffective management or leaders, and it made for a very negative environment. There are brown-nosers who advance and the workers who are smart are held back. There are many personalities that crave power and these people advance because the bosses know how to get their cooperation for every dirty task.
