Is it normal i need a good enough reason to shower?

In order to shower, I need a good enough reason.

I need to be convinced that it's worth my time, money and effort.

It's a half-hour of my time and I figure it costs me around $5 in soap, electricity, water, and laundry (etc..). If I pay myself minimum wage for the 1/2 hour and add in my expenses then the shower costs me about $10 total.

It costs me $10, AND I dislike putting forth the effort, this is why I need a good enough excuse to do it. I have negotiations with myself and sometimes others when considering showering. IIN?

Let me guess you've got no girlfriend or wife. What a surprise.

      Assuming they have a gender?

Actually, I'd take a leap and say this creature is a goblinoid of sorts. Lord knows they don't clean much..

Maybe you're one of those lucky people who don't really need to shower or bathe often. Even just a hundred years ago people bathed on average less than weekly, just maintaining their scent with fragrances and powdering their skin and hair to keep it looking less oily. And when my parents, who were hippies, were young in the seventies, shampoos and soaps were much harsher, and people just could not shower more than a couple times a week without damaging their skin and hair. Even today, in Europe, people wash far less often than North Americans do. We're the weird ones to them. It's quite normal to see people in public with greasy hair in Italy and Greece for example.

But you might be one of those lucky people, like I said, who doesn't really get "dirty" very quickly. Your skin stays fairly oil free, your hair does not look greasy, and you may not even sweat enough to develop a strong body odour. This is normal, however, you must understand, that most people here are going to think you're a freak because most people from adolescence have showered so often because of self-consciousness that they feel really gross and even irritable if they don't shower. Not only that, but because their skin and hair is used to being dried out from constant showering, their oil production is in overdrive, and they'll get greasy much faster than someone who showers less often. And when you're used to having clean skin, and especially if you exfoliate, the feeling of a thick "horny" layer, with dead skin cells, just feels extremely uncomfortable, and even itchy to a frequent washer.

So, no, it's not exactly "normal" to negotiate showering, but it is well in the normal "range" of behaviour. Your concerns with time and money, I don't share, because any hang-ups I might have are far outweighed by the number one benefit, the way warm water makes me feel. It takes all my cares away and actually decreased stress noticeably. It's my one half hour of bliss a day. It's better than sleep! Sometimes I'm in there for well over an hour, and once or twice a year even over 4 hours! Luckily, I live in the country so I don't pay for water, but the amount of energy it must take to heat the water is probably making you cringe. But, at least I take showers on the cool side, cuz I don't like being too hot. Sorry for ranting a bit ^.^

PS - I'm a singer and the steam helps my voice, and I also do my best thinking and even song-writing in the shower.

  • Don't like showering? Go for a skinny dip in the sea. It actually works, people don't stink when they bath in salt water.... plus there are many other benefits if you research it.

    • If I lived near the sea I surely would do this!

Aren't the salt water make your body feel sticky when it dry? I live near the sea. After playing in the salt water I feel sticky and then I shower again using tap water at home.

      • Yeah, it does. I mean, when I take a swim off the boat and come back, it can have a salty feeling until you dry off and (I imagine you could simply) brush off the salt. (I may live on a boat and swim a lot, but I do have a fairly normal shower which I tend to use. I also don't have to deal with sand usually.) Anyway, as Justsomejerk said, it's great for the hair... and also the skin.

Because, I am Gandalf and I command you to come with me on a journey of epic proportions. This journey will be filled with adventure, danger and possibly death for your follow companions or for you. If you make it back alive, you'll be considered a hero and the tale of your epic quest will be written in books with gorgeous calligraphy and sang in numerous elvish and hobbitish songs. There will be times when I will leave you and your companions to fend for yourselves, but in doing so you will gain vital experience. Have you made up your mind yet? Saying "No" is not an option. You will come with me whether you'll like it or not. I'll come back in the morning and we'll leave soon after.

*Taps staff on the ground three times. Shadowfax appears in 5mins. I, Gandalf the White, jumps on her back and we ride off into the sunset together.*

During the winter, I shower once every 2-4 days (more often in the summer because I sweat more). I guarantee you could shave that 30 minutes down to 5 minutes if you really wanted to, broken down as 2 minutes in the shower, 3 minutes dressing/undressing etc. Be economical with your showering. You don't need to spend time drying yourself afterwards; why not just wrap a towel around yourself and do whatever household chores you needed to do anyway? You'll be dry in no time. Apply a little thought and I bet you could cut it down to a tiny fraction of what it currently takes you.

Really, I guess there is no reason I can think of to bother showering if you don't mind stinking.

If you refigure your math it's not 10$ .. the water alone costs pennies plus the amount of soap, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and bubble bath. Even if you use all of these you're probably looking at 2$ per shower at most. Plus the minutes you spend there 5-15 if you're a guy and don't need to shave your legs and such.

Depends what area he/she lives in, what brands of soap, bodywash, shampoo, conditioner, and bubble bath, and the gender. You can't really know unless you live with OP.

Must be a quiet expensive soap. Or you use more than half a pack of shampoo every shower.

You don't need to shower for half an hour or use $5 worth of soap. A shorter shower with less lathering (or cheaper soap) would do the trick.
Go to the Dollar Store and get some cheap soap. Shower for five minutes daily. People will like you for it.

I don't think it's that big a deal. Showering everyday is wasteful and unnecessary if you aren't actually dirty.

It doesn't take half an hour, even counting getting dressed and undressed. Also, if you do it in your free time, there is no reason to pay yourself minimum wage. But, I can understand wanting to save money.

I practically never shower..3 or 4 times a month...Maybe..I take a little spitz bath everyday...wash hair, pits, etc..and brush my teeth..but never an actual shower or bath... I have very dry skin...hot water, soap and the chlorine in the water murder me...I feel like someone poured acid on me...I hate it..in fact i dont evenneed it to get off dead skin..because i work out hard at
east once a week and when i am all hot and sweaty after...i just take a nice towel and rub myself. down with it...

I shower twice a day. Once in the morning before I go out and once after I come back, around sunset. I'm a girl and I didn't take a lot of time to shower, just about 15 minutes and it didn't cost much. To shower once every 5/7 days seems not normal to me.

Same here. My girlfriend is always asking why I am like this. I just like to feel clean to fall asleep and want to be fresh for going out. This person is doing too much with their shower. I do not understand why they need 30 minutes to shower and if they use a bar of soap for every shower?

      • I'm figuring it takes 30 minutes counting undressing, dressing, toweling off, the hands-on parts of doing the laundry created from showering and a few other incidentals that come with showering.

$5 total for the utility costs (water, hot water heater), soap, shampoo, laundry detergent, laundry expenses (detergent, bleach, electricity, water). It adds up.

Not to mention the environmental impact!!

This is disturbing that people are so blind to the true cost of showering. You're wasting your life and cash on such a worthless pursuit and you don't even realize it.

This means you also don't wear clothes either, right?

          Comment Hidden ( show )
            -
          • I do but I wear the same ones from one shower to the next, generally I change once to twice a week. Almost all of my clothing is multi-purpose, meaning I can wear it as pajamas as well as normal everyday clothing. I guess you could categorize it as "workout/sports" type clothing. I have a pair of jeans that I throw on sometimes if I have to dress up.

  • Nandoe

If you don't take a shower you will stink like hell, so if I where you, I should take a shower at least once in 2 days. And by the way, you don't need half an hour to shower. You can be done in less than 10 minutes. And you can always shower with cold water. (sorry for my bad English)

    • Counting getting undressed, dressed and the time it takes to throw my dirty clothes into the washer and then the dryer, it takes 1/2 hour.

      I don't care if I stink so that's not even a factor.

But dressing and undressing doesn't require water. So thatt doesn't count.
