Is it normal i'm indirectly irritated by trolling?

It'd help, if you, the reader, read the full 'rant' so you completely understand my position.

This is becoming more and more of an issue as of late, especially on less manageable sites. I feel the practice of trolling is turning into an excuse for insecure people to cyber bully others on the internet (because they 'can'). Now, understand that I don't hate all forms of trolling or all 'trolls'. Some forms of it can be quite funny, even for the victim. Most of it used today, however, is not funny at all and can be equated to cyber bullying. I'm actually irritated by other people being harassed by trolls (or just the average 'hater' in YT comments).

I'm bringing up this issue because I feel trolling is becoming a lame excuse to bully and belittle others with the excuse of "for teh lulz". The 'scary' thing is, especially on Youtube, is that 'idiot' or person who just had a misinformed opinion could easily come out as a troll and drag you into an even more pointless argument.

Troll logic is probably the worst. Troll logic is the double standard where the 'hater' can make long hateful and butthurt rants, but nobody else can. The internet has gotten so fearful of trolls disguising as idiots it gives them the win in any situation. An idiot must CLEARLY be a troll, right? Nobody can be that stupid right? Thing is, I've seen normal ideas projected by trolls...and stupid ideas projected by idiots. The line is so blurred now you can't tell the idiots from the trolls who pretend to be idiots.

Normally, I was very confused about what kind of person it takes to make an internet troll. Just recently, this mom of a kid in my mom's daycare, passed away to cancer. Sad. Well, thing is, shortly after his mom passed, he started acting up. As I assisted with the daycare, I started noticing he acted exactly like the internet trolls I've seen. He would make snarky, even insulting comments at me with a sly smile; the same kind of smile I'd expect from someone who wants you to react negatively to him. He knows I can't hurt him (and I never intend to). I ignore the snarky comments obviously, but it shocked me. Are trolls these days really sad individuals who have had tragedy in their lives? Seems that way.

Sorry for the long post. For those who went TL;DR: Trolling is becoming lame and repetitive. Do you agree most trolls do not know how to 'properly' troll?

Dappled - I actually read the story of that girl who killed herself by jumping under a train. The troll guy called her a whore and photoshopped her face on a picture of a train. It was terrible how insensitive he was. Also he has Aspberger's Disorder, I have it too and he makes all of us who have it look bad. :/

I mostly agree with OP; SOME forms of trolling are funny, like some of the fake stories on this site. That's not serious at all, it annoys some people but that's it. But cyber bullying and joking about any taboo subjects are never funny. Some crazy 1D fans on Twitter were saying this famous guy deserved to die, and if his daughter is so upset she should kill herself. I'm sure some of you have heard about Mitch Lucker, frontman of the band Suicide Silence. And his daughter is only 5. They also said Alex Gaskarth (frontman of All Time Low) should kill himself because he said he didn't like 1D's new song, and that it was probably his fault his brother committed suicide (he was basically still a kid at the time so that can't be true). Not saying all "Directioners" are crazy, but a good portion of them are.

Awww, yeah, I always think the limit of trolling should be where it makes someone realise they've been tricked and then they laugh about it. If it's intruding on someone's grief or making someone suicidal or so angry they want to kill then it's gone too far. At that point, it's not trolling. It's emotional cruelty.

People should be aware that trolling is now a jailable offence in the UK. A fifteen year old girl was killed by a train and her family set up a Facebook memorial page for her. Some guy left this message: "I feel asleep on the tracks lolz". He was sentenced to serve four and a half months in jail.

I don't actually believe he was being malicious. I think he actually thought it was okay to make jokes about a dead teenager to her friends and family. This lack of social awareness and lack of empathy seems common and I see it on IIN all the time.

I know it develops with age but I see more and more people reaching adulthood and seemingly not understanding social convention and how society functions. I see lots of people who don't think beyond their own self and their own experience. The world is important only in how it interfaces with them. In many ways, a lot of people live a video game existence where nothing is real and nothing has value.

      This.

I was going to type something but it's all right here and I fully agree. Usually, trolling does not bother me but it disgusts me to see people slandering individuals who have died or individuals suffering from some sort of mental illness and giving this excuse "if you can't take it, then get off the internet lol", "You people are too sensitive" or "you're taking things way too seriously, lol". Sorry, but some things in life really are serious.

A lot of people complain that my generation is losing it's empathy and respect towards others as well as it's social decorum and I blame the mentality of "don't take it so seriously" when it comes to topics that one really shouldn't joke around about in ANY context.

(The sad thing is that a lot of my friends that DO complain about this ARE the kind of people that go online and mock these deceased individuals and troll on serious subjects and they seem to have no understanding of the reality that internet is a part of reality.)

I always wonder how the family of famous people feel when that person dies. It seems to be acceptable to make jokes about that person because they almost seem publicly-owned. I know some of the joking is a coping mechanism against the enormity of what death means and also I'd probably be amused if Rupert Murdoch died in ironic circumstances. It's still a human life, though. Just because I don't understand why this... thing... has chosen to pursue evil doesn't mean it loses the rights of a normal human.

Well, it's a pretty well-established fact that people lose a lot of empathy and are more capable of acting cruelly toward someone if they are not in the same room as the other person, or can't see them, or don't know them. There is a piece of research you've possibly heard of relating to this by the psychologist Stanley Milgram, if you want to look it up.

In today's society we are increasingly able to communicate with people who live on the other side of the world, who we can't see and who we don't know. My hypothesis is that people's empathy is reduced when they communicate online, so they are more able to act in ways they would never act in a face-to-face encounter.

I also think people gain a sense of security from being online and anonymous. People feel more able to express their inner selves that they can't express in the "real world", either because they have a social difficulty or because they have thoughts which are considered socially unacceptable (I think almost everyone has socially unacceptable thoughts to some degree or another). This can work in both good and bad ways. While you get the trolls who act in terrible ways online, you also get the people who use the privilege of the internet in a positive and productive way when they might not in "real life" because they are not brave enough or coherent enough or too anxious.

I think people who have a "troubled past" (I dislike the use of that phrase but I don't have a better one easily at hand) are more likely to act in socially unacceptable, cruel ways. Maybe it's an expression of their inner pain.

I see two, maybe three, different types of troll. There are the type who are witty and sharp, and actually funny. They are even grammatically sane. I don't even really think of those people as trolls though; they're a whole different beast. I wouldn't say most of those people go out to hurt people, more to create humour by being mildly offensive or by lampooning someone. They might end up poking fun at someone and hurting their feelings a little bit, but I don't think that is their main intention.

There are the type who say "you're favorite band sux lawl", and leave it at that. Those people are harmless idiots, we can ignore them. Maybe it's a sign of someone who is likely to troll more seriously in the future, I don't know.

There are the type who say "Ill kill u and you're family and dog, you desevre to die yu gay/whore/fag. No wun loves you.". Those people are a lot more serious, because those words constitute actual threats and are designed purely to hurt people. They're not clever or funny, and they're not trying to be clever or funny. People say "don't feed the trolls" because these people are often looking for attention, and giving them attention means they'll troll more because they know it works.

I don't know where I'm going with this. But I agree with you.

I don't mind trolling at all even if it's directed at me. I don't mind jokes about people who killed themselves as metioned above. I just don't care as long as they don't insult my favourite band.

    • I'm sort of the same way with me except I actually like it when trolls make fun of the stuff I like.

Sometimes you can play with a troll and have fun with them, maybe even turning the tables on them in the process.

Still, the issue here I'm presenting is about other people getting harassed by trolls who MAY be affected negatively that irritates me.

On another forum I frequent there is a guy who commonly writes "Trollin ain't easy" but he is dead serious and his view is just seriously warped from the norm.

Idiots give trolls a bad name.

    • True, it could be said that the majority of trolls these days are idiots and go for the 'easy pickings' on sites like Youtube. One can be entirely blatantly obvious and still get fed. Even if one person doesn't feed them, 10 more will treat him like he is serious. It doesn't even require any skill what they do now because a lot of it is repetitive.
