Is it normal i'm curious about what underwear a girl is wearing/wears?

Is this normal that whenever I talk to, meet a girl in person or even see a girl somewhere, I will wonder what underwear she has on, and what she likes to wear. There is this girl (shes 16) and she likes to wear her old school uniform on thursday nights at our local youth group for teens and young adults. I was thinking tonight her skirt is great and the tights too, (they're both black) and wondered wether she wears thongs. It's like that with a lot of girls though, and I don't want to just ask in case I offend them, I do talk to some of them, just about normal things really, but wonder how/when to bring up the subject of underwear, i'm not after sex or anything as I am a 22 year old virgin by choice, but hey, they dont know that!

    a friends mother had a nude colored pair with a patch of dark fur sewn on the front, she used to lift her dress when drunk and laugh , then they were confiscated one day and burnt in the backyard
