Is it normal i like to imagine sad things to try to sleep?

I often tend to imagine sad scenarios that could lead me to cry in order to try to sleep and hug my pillow a little tighter. I rarely actually cry though, and needless to say I do not fall asleep faster as a result, I guess.

Is it normal? Is there a missing piece of the puzzle? I can answer more if that is the case.

Is it because imagining sad things seems comforting? I think this happens because your brain probably starts releasing endorphins and probably other chemicals when you make yourself feel sad by thinking certain thoughts. It makes sense, it just also sounds like it isn’t having the intended effect.

Do you have a pet you can hang out with before going to bed maybe? Hugging a pillow or using heavy blankets also helps, especially if you have the AC on

Bad idea. What you think of right before you fall asleep will program your dreams and give you bad ones. Try to think of happy times and you’ll sleep better.

    • Come to think about it, this might be why I have nightmares rather frequently. I don't know where to start to fix the problem though.

As I said, you must have a few happy times in your life that you can remember. Think of the old “glass half full” analogy. You need to decide to change your perspective. No one can do it for you. I’ve been there.

Some reason if the tv goes off in the middle of the night I have crazy dreams someone is breaking in and I cant wake up to reach for my gun. I get sleep paralysis when theres no noise. I have to have the TV going. Actually just last night it went off and I dreamed I got shot in a road rage altercation.
