Is it normal i have to wear glasses?

Hi. I have to wear glasses. I had to ever since I was six. I always feel, well, different. I hate wearing glasses. Almost no one in my class does. Sometimes when we go to the store I always see them trying on sunglasses and I am just awkwardly standing there. People always think of the people with glasses as 'The Nerds' and I am always trying to laugh like I think it is funny when that happens but I'm hurt. :( I don't get why people say people with glasses are nerds but they wear nerd glasses anyways. So, I am dumb and I ordered nerd glasses so I could fit in...... They haven't come yet but I am still feeling sad. I hate it. Please help me.

As a nerd, I find the notion that nerddom is something to be avoided offensive.

I've been wearing glasses since sometime in first grade and it was harder for me when I was child. Wearing glasses seems to run in my family but I believe what cause me having to wear glasses was because of a incident that happened in 1st grade. I remember being in my schools pathetic excuse for a "playground" and there were these giant plastic jumping jacks that cam in a assortment of colours. This boy I knew a about a year previously from a summer camp, was playing with the plastic jumping jacks (Heck, I think his name was Jack!). Something happened and he ended up poking me in the eye with his jack (I remember it being a sherbet orange colour with dust and randomly caked pieces of dirt on it). Not long after that incident, I started to have problems seeing in class. I used to sit more towards the back and after my mother told the teacher I was having some problems, I got moved more towards the front. It barely helped and once again I was having more problems and I know I must really pissed my bitch teacher off with my eye problems. Long story short, I went to eye doctor and found out that I was near-sighted and I had to get glasses.

I remember being insecure about them because I seemed to be one of the few kids in that school that wore glasses. However, there were probably a lot of adults that wore them too. Skip to some years later, I started to going to a after school program and it didn't take long for the kids to bully me. I really hurt my feelings and I noticed that there was a double standard. The some of the bullies in question had friends who wore glasses but they were immune from the taunts simply because they were friends. Some more years later, there was a period were my friends kept wanting me to get contacts (I'm so glad that my mother refused to let me have them!). Around those times, it was still rare to see someone in who was my peer group wearing glasses. As the years wore on I got used to it.

I realized that my glasses help to add to my uniqueness. I've grown to love them so much that I don't think I'll ever stop wearing them unless I somehow outgrow the need to do so. I'm very dependent on them. Words can't describe how horrible it is to lose your current pair of glasses and ending up having to wear a older pair with the wrong description or having nothing to wear. I never take them off except for the times I remember to clean them, which is kind of rare:/

There are many people who do wear them regardless of age. I wouldn't suggest that you get contacts because they can pose some health risks.

^^^ This in mind, it makes wearing glasses all the more worth it. As for the people who give you a hard time, they are being immature and they aren't worth it. I know it hurts but it best to ignore them.

When I was 14 half the children in school wore glasses. So don't worry your not the only one going blind. Most of my family suffers from asthma, poor vision and hearing loss. Also yes people do associate glasses with knowledge but would you prefer they think you were dumb? Also not everyone that wears glasses wears NERD glasses if given the option. Wearing nerd glasses because of public appeal is a hipster thing. Most people with a prescription don't care about those rules. Hipsters wear fake nerd glasses.

I always say glasses add something to the face, they can be quite pretty.

About that nerdish talk: I'm kind of a nerd myself but I don't wear glasses. I don't need them, my eyes are good enough. So there's nothing true about that.

You must be still young. I hated glasses when I first got them (4th grade), they were just an annoyance then... but my teacher would actually make fun of me for NOT wearing them, cos i couldn't see anything... anyway now I'm well over the limit of legal-blindness but I don't really see the problem, glasses can be pretty cool if you get some that suit you.

    Have you tried contact lenses?

A lot of people wear glasses. About half of the people I work with wear glasses or contacts and I don't think of them as nerds. Have you considered contacts?

I remember my brother had a hard time with the nerdy names when he was young but that didn't carry on into adulthood. Judging someone's nerd factor on their glasses alone is a little childish and most people don't care.

I've been wearing glasses for 6 years and I've never heard anyone say any of the things you said above. I love wearing glasses, I actually don't feel like myself without wearing them. You shouldn't feel bad because you have to wear glasses, a lot of people wear glasses and look great in them.
