Is it normal i have no idea how to dress well?

Or even what "well-dressed" looks like? I know NOTHING about clothes, and for the most part it doesn't bother me because I only care about being practical and not looking good. However, when I do want to look good I have no idea how, and all my attempts fail miserably.

For example, I thought it would look good to wear gloves with a short-sleeved shirt to college. I genuinely thought I looked pretty good when I tried this, but all my friends politely told me I looked utterly ridiculous.

I've resorted to wearing clothes that are plain, cheap and practical. I'd LIKE to look nice with my clothes, but I have absolutely zero fashion sense. Show me a picture of someone who I'm told dresses well and I will say they look like they're trying far too hard, they look silly or at best just unremarkable and I can't see what looks so great about the way they dress.

By the way, I'm an 18 year old guy, 5'11" tall, skinny with "medium-length" brown hair and fairly feminine facial features. British, if that makes a difference :P

Long story short, is it normal to have no fashion sense? And does anyone know how to rectify this problem? I've asked female friends and nothing has helped.

Thanks in advance :)

Just search online for some male fashion advice. In fact, there's a subreddit titled "male fashion advice", and there are several websites dedicated to people who want some help on their dress sense.

Also you're beautiful just the way you blah blah blah etc. But really, if you want some help, it's not too hard to find it.

Or, if you can afford it, you could try going around the shops with a 'personal shopper'. You tell him/her what you are trying to achieve and they will get you to try on loads of clothes so that you can decide.
Good thing is that you have a great body size/build that is easy to dress-up.
Bad thing is that personal shoppers may cost around £200 for a session, so if you are just 18 years old, that may be a bit much :(
    Good luck anyway!

I'm sure that there would be an in-store stylist at a department store. Maybe see if they can organize an outfit that's both comfy and stylish and something you know will go all in one (as in they do a whole outfitting for you) and then that way you won't need to worry about if it "goes" well or not.

Try and do an online colour analyser test so you will have a palet to work from. Your likely a summer or spring.

Clothes need to fit well to look good so pay attention to this.

Well fitted trousers in black, grey of khaki are a good base with a plain tee and a collared shirt.

Shoes should match belts and it's hard to match browns with jeans.

Actors and boy bands have teams dressing them so check what they are wearing and steal their style.

    PS. I'm not gay.

based on your self description, I think you can get away with fitted jeans/pants and a plain white or black tee shirt. You can wear variations of this same outfit, as long as you have a unique pair of kicks/shoes. Maybe a pair of sunglasses and you are good to go.

I used to go crazy for fashion, mostly because I didn't understand the costs of being fashionable. I put in way to much effort until I realized people would still think I'm hot wearing plain, fitted neutral colored clothing.

    Hahaha, normal.

I am a 20 year old female Tomboy that grew up in a rural area where if you want to have fun, being primped and polished is an utterly ridiculous idea. But when I venture out of the sticks in my T-Shirt, jeans and tennis shoes with a pony tail women look at me as if they are looking at the scum of the Earth.

I vote normal, ask your friends for more fashion pointers and when you go out shopping, let them go with you to help you pick things that might look good. That's what I did. Eventually I developed a fashion sense of my own and it works for me when I feel like being uncomfortable but stylish.

    Normal if you're a guy.

There's nothing wrong with being practical but of course you need to dress up for some things. Personally I really love well dressed men. And you can look good without going complex or expensive.

Are there certain occasions you want advice for? Interviews? Night-Out? Date? Are there any colors you like to wear? I'd recommend some places but I don't know the department stores in England. I feel your pain when it comes to height. I'm a tall girl it's hard to find clothes that fit. What do you think about the pictures below?

  • Don't matter, there will always be someone who hates the way you dress. Even if you think you look cool.
