Is it normal i hate when people use "you earn respect" phrase?

I hate this phrase since its a lie and people are blaming the victim. Some people are just disrespectful to everyone. You can be a very respectable person and people will still be rude to you. So assuming being respectful will make everyone like you is a complete lie.

I don't understand why people keep using this stupid saying. We have people being beaten up and harassed for being a different race, gender, sexuality or religion and people are really blind enough to claim these people EARNED that disrespect.

Yes, she was a born a women so we should treat her like a lower class citizen, he wears glasses so lets beat the snot out of him, and she was born autistic so lets all point and laugh, he was born black so he must be a criminal lets toss rocks at him. I really don't think people should be picked on for this type of shit and yet people encourage it by saying "They EARNED this disrespect". No they didn't!

Yes, some people might be rude or cruel and so people stop liking them but to apply this to every single case is wrong. If someone was rude to you it does not always mean you did anything wrong. They might just be pricks.

I failed to understand your argument.
You started off by talking about respect and the rest was about unjustified disrespect. I couldn't see the connection as a whole for the statement you were trying to make. I am tired so perhaps I missed something?

I think it takes great courage through adversity and hardship to remain respectful. But I do think respect earns respect, at least from other people who are respectful. And if you act respectful towards those who are disrespectful, you really highlight to them the severity of their disrespect in contrast, which can bring about change. I think it's for a greater good.
It's like Nelson Mandela and when he abolished apartheid, he saw his cruel gaurds from his time in prison as part of a bigger picture, the rotting system. When he liberated South Africa he forgave them and marched as one alongside them.

I suppose it boils down to embodying the change you wish to see in the world, which is another one of those cliches but one which I believe in.

    • My argument is that someone being rude to you does not mean you did anything to earn that in every case. Some people are just rude poeple. So saying "Well they were rude to you since you earned it" is not always correct. Like picking on that kid since he is too quiet, or too smart, or a different race is not disrespect which was earned. So you cant say "Well they deserved it. They earned it by being quiet, or being smart or being a different race". Since its not something to be picked on for.
