Is it normal i hate seeing homeless people and want to fix it?

I hate seeing homeless people and right now a lot of people are either homeless or one step away from being homeless. I had an idea that I thought might fix that. Factories and businesses start leaving when taxes become too high. So I had an idea. What if they made a homeless shelter that is also a factory/business. That would house homeless but in turn they work for free and the shelter. The people who are not homeless generally end up going to school or making their own business. The rules for joining the shelter would be 18 and jobless and must go to work on time everyday.

I appreciate your feeling bad for homeless people but what you're suggesting is turning the disenfranchised into indentured servants

    • Yes, and how is that bad?(Indentured servitude was a form of debt bondage, established in the early years of the American colonies and elsewhere. It was most used as a way for poor teenagers in Britain and the German states to get free passage to the American colonies. They would work for a fixed number of years, then be free to work on their own.) A home and food for labour. Now what they are usually doing is hooking or begging on the streets. In fact some of them are raped. I think this would be a bit more pleasant and beneficial for both the person hiring and the homeless. So whats your point? If we had this we might have less homeless youth.

It's a good idea in theory. But I think there would have to be some kind of progression scheme (?) in place, otherwise, long term, could it be counted as slave labour?! It breaks my heart to see people homeless as well and it's frustrating not to be able to do anything/much. If you have the time, you could volunteer at a homeless shelter, or donate some food now and again (if you have the money)? Sometimes homeless people really appreciate it if you just buy them a coffee or some other (non-alcoholic) beverage. I think they often get judged by others and people assume it's their own fault they're where they are, but it's sometimes not. And when someone treats them with a bit more respect and does something kind for them, I imagine it means a lot and makes them feel more like a member of society.

    • Well actually this would be very helpful. Since these people would be housed and they would be able to get more free aid for school. The law currently says to get grants, you have to either be low income or become low income by being homeless/not living with family for a year. Yet nothing says your parents are responsible for paying school or doing anything for you after 18 at which point a lot of people are kicked out. The shelter would be able work out a schedule but still have them working some of the time. That or they could work out a way to get people school for cheaper/free. However if they made it completely free they might have it turn into the crap other primary schooling has turned into. For those who did not want to go to school they just stay working at the shelter maybe given opportunity to become part of management. Also im not making a lot of money myself. I just hate seeing it. Also slaves are forced this would be people volunteering.

a lot of the homeless (in the US) are homeless by choice. they don't want help, or they don't want to work, or they feel like the way they live isn't a problem. there are already MANY resources for homeless to seek help, so ask yourself: why don't they?

it's nice that you want to come up with ideas to fix the "homeless situation" but I think you really need to fully understand the homeless demographic before any of your ideas will come close to relevant.

you have a good heart, you just need more knowledge about the subject before you're really going to be able to make a difference.

    • This is what I was thinking. Not all the people who are homeless choose to live that lifestyle but I have met many in my own town who do. A lot of the homeless I have met here have been homeless for multiple years and don't act or look desperate. Some of them even have part time jobs as groundskeepers and they still live on the streets for one reason or the other.

    • Actually I looked into that. There is always a catch. For most of those programs you have to come from a poor family were homeless for a year or be mentally ill. If you are homeless but can not prove you are mentally ill no matter how bad you have it they wont help you. Also a lot of 18 year olds get kicked out since parents realize at that point they are no longer legally required to care for them.

well, just because you said all that doesn't make it true.

if that is what you believe, that's your opinion. but I whole heartedly disagree with your opinion because of my knowledge and experience in the area of social services. but there's nothing I can do on this forum to prove that to you so really, it's irrelevant.

again, I think it's great that you want to think of ways to help the homeless and I hope someday you find a solution for which you can be a proud and active participant.

keep researching and get involved. the world needs more people like you who care and take action.

        • Yeah I guess the fact I have family in it doesn't make it true either. I actually know people in these programs and been to these programs and this was the rule for most of them. They even had this stuff at the school and anyone with parents who made too much money were turned away and told they couldn't join. I have seen various programs for helping people find jobs and for homeless and the rules generally go low income or mental illness.

For university sign up the rule for becoming low income is being homeless or not living with family(meaning any family)for a year to be declared your own income. Most the scholarships say "And must be low income" at the bottom. So either you have to have perfect grades or poor to get any grants and scholarships. For student loans its easier but they only usually pay books and can not be used for housing.

I have even had homeless friends who cant get help since they are not mentally ill so they were turned down by the homeless shelter. So please do educate yourself before you are so quick to discredit someone who really knows about it.

Also law does not require parents to take care of you at 18 since that makes you a legal adult.

i am very happy with my level of education.

i did not attempt to discredit you, I simply said that just because you said something doesn't make it true. you cite absolutely no verifiable sources to prove your argument. this is the internet, I'm just cautioning the "audience" to be weary and do their own research on the subject.

i'm not going to argue with the rest of your response because honestly it's all over the place and lacks focus.

however, I will state that student loans most definitely can be used for housing, I know because I've done it. but just like you, I won't cite any sources to prove this (i'm too lazy for this platform). so just because I said it, doesn't make it true either.

i do appreciate your passion for the topic. take care.

            • That means your argument is equally invalid. Simply saying im right and your wrong because I said so is not valid either.

Yes it saddens me to see someone homeless, and im caught in two minds if i should toss them some change or not, because you just don't know if they're gonna spend it on drugs, or buy food and drink.

I occasionaly do give change i'll make a judgement weather or not i think they'll spend it wiseley

I do donate £20 a month to a homeless charity though, althoguh it's indirect, atleast you know it's not going on beer or weed.

As for your idea.. its a good one, but it will never happen tbh

    • Why wouldn't it happen? We cant have homeless people! When people are homeless and jobless its a bad sign. As well as that laws make it illegal to be homeless. Since its considered loitering. This would help homeless, help jobless 18 year olds, bring business back, and help the economy. They would have more people with better opportunity to go to school and able to get more aid for schooling. That just fixed 4 issues at one time.

        • Well fuck that... If they wont do anything to help we should. Sitting around like idiots fixes nothing. If government does not care so we have to help ourselves and each other. If they wont make a difference why cant we?

          • People sit around depressed saying "Well cant do anything about it" well why cant we? Its not like anyone else is doing anything? So why just sit here? Its not helping anything! and sitting around being angry is not fixing anything either! If people want change they have to make it. We cant expect the government to do everything for us since a lot of times they wont! The reason the world ends up in such bad shape is no one cares and no one trys. Things would change if enough people tried to make a difference.

    This person understands.
    But money is the problem.
If u use cash against cash you create a bigger problem. And all the rich, greedy, famous snobs just watch you burn.
And if they do use money to help with junk like "charity" and "donation" yet all that cold useless cash just gets sent to other wealthy tyrants. They must all fall.

  • Sure that might work for some homeless people but if you've ever known homeless people you'd know many of them are really fucked up in the head. Many are mentally ill or are drug addicts, etc.
Some even like being homeless and don't want any sort of help.

My least favorite ones are those that approach my vehicle's windshield, spit on it then try to clean it off using a squeegee.
Holy fuck man, please just stay away from me and my ride, thank you.

Many homeless make more money than you probably do. They can make a couple hundred bucks a day begging on a good day and a hundred bucks on a bad day. And that's tax free money. The reason why you don't see them with anything is because their drunks, druggies, or really fucking stupid/mental projects.

Also, why limit this to homeless?

We need those asshole jailbirds to be producer's as well.

Get those dogs working. Crack the whip!

A better idea would be to round up all the homeless people and jailbirds onto an island and give them weapons and put it on pay per view and see who survives.

It'd make millions over night and then we could actually feed and house the surviving ones, lol.

You KNOW every guy would pay to see that. So would many females.
Shame on you, you sick fucks!

NO! SERIOUSLY, I agree it's sad and a tragedy to have any person or animal homeless and in need of help.
Without them providing some kind of benefit to society in a financial manner I doubt the Government or private sector will care enough to do anything.

    Sick world we live in.

    • You realize not all mental patients are criminals and you should not try and group them in. Simply being crazy does not mean you are harmful to others. Many mental patients are self destructive not outwardly dangerous.

I've always felt sorry for them, strange coming from me but I've met many in my day and for the most part they seemed lost and confused, guess I see myself in them a little.

I don't like seeing homeless people on the sidewalks or streets. I don't give them money, but sometimes, I'll give them bottle water or a snack bar, bag of chips. Something to help.
