Is it normal i hate cancer merchandise?

Well, everytime I see something about cancer at the store or on tv or anywhere I get really pissed off. It isn't because I'm some jerk who doesn't care about cancer patients or whatever, but my mom has cancer and I HATE constantly being reminded of it everywhere. Am I the only person who has a loved one going through the battle or a patient who is just fed up with it?

Raising awereness above which treshhold? If you don't know what cancer is by now, you probably never will.

But yeah! Lost my dad and friend to cancer. And my grandma and uncle currently have cancer.

I feel it is just getting whiney by now. Just like the black-baby-from-Africa-commercials, just emotional blackmail that makes me weep and feel sick for humanity.

Biggest issue is pink ribbon! It is just sexist(while data shows more men die from/have cancer), focusses on one of the less lethal forms of cancer and again sexist. Campaign focusses on women while men are just as capable of getting breastcancer. (My uncle has breastcancer.) It is a horrible concept showing that marketting is more important than the illness itself.

@dappled Why cancer then? If you want to do good, then there are overall better things to collect money for. Must be some personal interest. Still a selfish interest in stead of an overall good goal. Not saying you shouldn't do it, but saying it isn't self satisfaction is just ignorant.

And you don't have to care about my family or me AND because it is a two way street I can promise you I won't care about your family or you. This isn't in bad spirit, I just don't care.

Just think about it, why do you want to do 'good'? Do you do it because it makes you feel bad? Do you get sad when you do it? Probably not. Again not saying you shouldn't! We all do what makes us feel good, I'm all about efficiency and making non-emotional choices, that makes me feel good and think the world will be a better place. I just admit that I do it because it makes ME happy/feel good.

-- All a bit offtopic, but think about it like this: is cancer really an area that needs more money? Or are there things that need it more? And the poster makes a valid point. (Ignoring ofc that those feelings should be processed and not avoided.) Is reminding people of painfull things better, when the awareness and fund raising starts to see deminishing returns? Is there a break even point? Is some people's pain worth less than others? Is some pain more important than other pain? Is the damage done by trying to achieve a goal always validated by the goal you want to achieve?

Again not saying you shouldn't, but you shouldn't dismiss the op, Dixi & MisterPanic points, as they do have a valid base. And saying someone is a troll, when you don't agree is a bit simple.

I agree. People donate to charity because it makes them feel good. To claim it's not motivated by a selfish desire is to be in total denial. I donate to charity by the way. I like to spend my money on stuff other than materials or things I'll consume, because the idea I've contributed to the betterment of humanity is a gratifying one. It makes me feel good.

What's worse is when I see all the pink ribbons, and I realize that I can't display my support because there isn't even a ribbon for the type of cancer my mother has.

    I hate it too.
One of my friends died of bone cancer a few years ago.
I wish cancer didn't exist, but it really doesn't help to constantly see it everywhere. Just be glad it's not October anymore.

I don't wear a pink ribbon at the moment but I'm currently raising money for cancer. It isn't to make myself feel better. It's (hopefully) to stop your brother, sister, mother, father, grandparent, whoever, from dying. Shame on me for caring about people I don't know. Shame on me for trying to make your life better in some way.

If you really want your family to die, I'll stop caring about this stuff. Perhaps you should start caring about my family, though. It's not a one-way street. Do your bit. And don't pretend we all do it to make ourselves feel better.

Can't you relate to the writer of this story? It's impossible to just have a moment without worrying about people you love who have cancer. It's just horrible, and believe it or not, you raise money just to feel better. You feel good when you know you're helping people, that's normal. I find it really annoying how people are constantly denying this.
