I once told a guy I thought he was nice, and he kicked up a total shitfit. I didn't see the problem, nice - GENUINELY nice - is one of the top qualities I appreciate in a person.

It never really occurred to me before that, that "nice" could be seen as an insult... :-S

nice is good so long as it doesnt imply your a doormat. you can be assertive in a nice way. being nice doesnt mean i say yes all the time. SOutherners seemd to have this down to an art form.

maybe because "nice" is to cliche or not very intriguing..nothing special about..I don't like being called "nice" or "sweet" either :D

  • To be honest, the meanest people are ones that people think are nice, so you kind of win and lose at the same time.

      How do you figure?

      • As in what makes me think that?
Well, it entirely depends. If you are someone with a lot of power, then less "innocence" is required.

For the average joe, you can pretty much destroy someones emotions by being a friend with the intention of malice.

Hmm. That's all well and good for mean people who are intelligent and competent and whose goals require that people think they're nice. I think there are a lot of people that don't fall into that category, though.

          • I agree. Most even don't do what I explained, although I believe the worst do. Imagine this. Someone is by your side the whole time, telling you things that you think make sense, yet are very bad. The "friend" is setting up all these problems for you, such as other friend problems, relationship problems, etc. The last person you turn to is the friend. They are the only thing you have. Then, they leave you, making it sound like it is your fault for everything that happened, then saying that they thought they would be able to deal with it, but it just got too much, and so they don't want to be friends (but in a much more "it's your fault way").

Most don't, but the worst do. Take Ted Bundy for example.

People who seem nice can do way more damage than people who get ostracised for openly being jerks, but I think it's a compliment either way. At best, it means "you're kind", and at worst, it means "you're socially competent".
