Is it normal i gained 40 pounds in 4 months

hi, about 4 months ago i used to smoke weed on a daily basis, then i had to quit, i was eating once a day normaly it was dinner and i ate that some time after i smoked a joint. i was about 180 pounds and usualy it was either a pizza, medium about 18" or a burger with (1)poutine or some deep fried chicken with potato wedges, and maybe a bag (large) of chips with a 1L Dr.Pepper for lunch, mainly unhealthy items, and i usualy stayed about 180 then like i said i had to quit smoking cigarettes and weed. and i started eating maybe twice a day, salads, maybe some pasta for dinner to go with whatever else, i also stopped eating red meats (steaks burgers ect) and just today i stepped on the scale and i was 220 (2)pounds.

NOTE i am 17, and living with my mother, she says im just eating more crap/carbs then i used to but i dont belive her i used to eat a loaf of bread every 2-3 days now maybe a loaf every 1 1/2 weeks and i want to see a doc about it but im not sure if i should or not

rant over is this normal? or is there just something wrong with me?

(1) poutine Fries with cheese and gravy
(2) 2.2 pounds = 1 kilos

you should change your diet - that could be the culprit. it would be good for you regardless.
as you age a little bit and stop growing, your metabolism slows down - but you're still young...
if you haven't changed anything and have gained weight rapidly you may want to go to the doctor and get your thyroid checked.
certain medications (like progesterone) can cause weight gain but you didn't say anything about that.

40 pounds in 4 months is a bit excessive. Weird, I definitely eat a loooooooot more when I'm stoned. I actually lose my appetite when I take a break from smoking.
You should probably go to a doctor, especially since 220 does not seem like a healthy weight for a 17 year old.

I agree with Neuro completely. You're going to have to work extra hard now to get back down to and maintain a normal weight. Recent studies have shown that a formerly obese person has to eat 20% fewer calories to maintain the same weight as a person who was never overweight.

Your body became accustomed to a certain diet and lifestyle and you changed that. Naturally, your body has changed as well.

Monitor your caloric intake and try to get a better idea of the nutrition needs of your body. I would also recommend more exercise to improve your metabolism.

This should help you get a good idea of what you need to be eating. I would also recommend you see a doctor. It is possible that you HAVE experienced a physical change beyond quitting pot and changing your diet. You won't know until you see a medical professional.
