Is it normal i find illegally selling movies charge ridiculous?

No I have never done this myself. However 5 years in jail seems like a lot for simply stealing a movie/music. I mean pot/drugs doesn't even get you put in jail that long. A lot of times depending on how much you have you get a ticket/fee. I also think drugs are more hazardous then selling a few illegal movies. Not saying its right to steal either I just think its a little harsh.

Yeah I agree with this it is too harsh 27
No it should be harsher 2

It's up to five years and no more than $10,000 in fines. (USA). The amount of jail time and/or fine they issue depends on the severity of your offence.

The 5years/$10,000 fine is the maximum, and you have to sell a lot of them to get that. I believe they measure it based on the amount of money you made selling the pirated movies, or the number of copies sold. If you sold say, 3, they would probably slap you on the wrist and you would get a small fine and community service. If you were say, operating a ring for pirated moves or something like that, then they would book you 5 years.

It's the exact same thing they do to shoplifters. (Over $250 is a felony)

It's rare they go full out, then again, its rare in either piracy or shoplifting that they would do enough of a crime to warrant such.

Almost all crimes in the USA have a "maximum sentence" where they cannot put you in for any longer than that max, no matter how big the crime was, murder being the obvious exception.
