Is it normal i feel this way about the als ice bucket challenge?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_Bucket_Challenge

I understand it's for a good cause.

I understand it's a way of utilising viral marketing for the benefit of a charity.

That's great.

But I don't like the pressure put on people by nominations; the shaming of someone for not ice bucketing themselves or donating to a charity they probably don't care much about.

I give money to 4 charities of my choice every month. I'm happy with this.

Yet, now I have been nominated on Facebook, I feel there's peer pressure to jump on the bandwagon, as though my efforts at being a good person in general don't matter as much as me doing some stunt on camera to echo the apparent widespread support for ALS (or MNDA).

Is it normal I feel this way? What do you think of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge?

Normal, I give to charities that mean something to me, I haven't been nominated even if I was I wouldn't do it. I bet half the people that do it, do it for the likes and don't even donate.

Nominate the person who nominated you.
Nominate them to film themselves filling out a check & mailing it to the charity or cause of your choosing.

I hate anything that relies on peer pressure to manipulate people.

It's a nice idea, donating to charity. However it's incredibly wasteful.

I do like the Gaza response of dumping a rubble bucket over your head instead.

I don't understand it. So you dont have to donate if you do the challenge? Fat lot of good that does.

    • I think you're meant to donate if you're nominated, whether or not you do the ice bucket challenge

What's even worst is this video going around with this dude with ALS trying to guilt trip people into donating. I get it dude you have problems. Guess what we all have problems I have to fight rats for cheese son don't push that guilt trip shit on me.

I've seen quite a few people who are tagged who didn't do it. Just respond in a way that is classy. Be sincere and explain why you've chosen not to do it without getting defensive, and very few people will have a problem with that. Even if some people don't understand and react badly, this whole thing will be over in a month anyway.

I understand what you mean, though. The "tagging" element is a key part of what makes these challenges viral, but it's coercive and I find it hard to blame anyone who reacts negatively to be challenged.

What I don't like is that a total cretin like Justin Beiber can put someone like the president of the United States on the spot. That little turd isn't even a citizen (Beiber, not Obama) and has been deported for being a nuisance, yet he still thinks he's so great.
I think someone should only be able to nominate those they know personally, and only one or two other people, at most.

If someone were to nominate me, I would delete, block and never talk to them again.
The ALS awareness challenge is the most annoying thing circulating around Facebook and no one has the right to talk to me, if they are that stupid. I support the cause and all, but that's as far as I go. A faceless charity will get not a single penny from my pocket. People suffer all over the world. Not my problem and I'm sick of Ads on TV forcing me to look into the eyes of abused animals, or starving children. Rubbish.

Just another reason I don't use social media.
Unfortunately, I would just say no and give them change like any other charity. I'm really getting over the whole stick-em-up mentality everyone has.

i will never give money to charity unless i directly give money to someone who needs it like a homeless person i dont care what they spend it on as long as they get it i would not drop my money in some box so it could go to god knows who and call it charity i would also do something cool like volunteers my time at a soup kitchen

i dont understand how this ice bucket challenge even works!

I don't often give to charities, but when I do, it's because the charity is representing my ideals. I wouldn't be crazy about getting nominated. I literally can't stand water being poured on me and getting wet. (It's a phobia.) I suppose the only way that you can get out of it is to make something up- a reason why you can't do the challenge-, or explain why you don't want to do it. It may help if you let them know that you do support charities.
